It isn't easy to make ends meet on a farm, and even more so when your family boasts eight members. When Ole Red is ailing and needs major repairs, Dad announces at breakfast that they'll need to take on an additional crop of burley tobacco in a neighbor's field.as if their Shady Meadows farm isn't enough work already. Author Bio

JARROD E. STEPHENS, an elementary teacher with a B.A. and Masters degree in Middle Grades Education, grew up on a small family farm in Eastern Kentucky. “Family Field Days was born from my love for the simple farming life,” Jarrod says. “I witnessed firsthand the bonds and friendships that were created in communities and families. Families worked together in the fields to make ends meet and through the many trials they faced together, they grew stronger.”

Jarrod still farms and hopes that his sons will continue tilling the soil just as their family has done for so many years. In fact, the tractor pictured on the cover is indeed the Stephens’ family tractor. “I learned nearly everything I know about farming while sitting atop it,” Jarrod says. “My plans are to restore it someday and to let my sons learn to farm on the same tractor I did.”

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am an elementary teacher with a B.A. and Masters degree in Middle Grades Education. I grew up on a small family farm in Eastern Kentucky. I still farm and hope that my sons will continue tilling the soil just as my family has done for so many years. In fact, the tractor pictured on the cover is indeed the Stephens’ family tractor. I learned nearly everything I know about farming while sitting atop it. One day I'd like to restore the old tractor so that my sons can learn to farm on the same tractor that I did.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Family Field Days was born from my love for the simple farming life. I witnessed firsthand the bonds and friendships that were created in communities and families. Families worked together in the fields to make ends meet and through the many trials they faced together, they grew stronger.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  As people read Family Field Days I hope that they are reminded of the important things in life; God and family.
