Family begins with Katy Hart on her way to California for the trial of the deranged Dayne Matthews fan who almost killed her last year. Dayne, a famous actor and a new Christian, is plagued by the paparazzi and is reluctant to submit Katy to their intense scrutiny.
When theyre not inside the courthouse, Dayne and Katy try to keep their relationship platonic, but their feelings for each other only intensify. Unfortunately, after some close calls with the paparazzi, the two decide not to pursue a relationship. Their worlds are too different. Katy returns to Indiana and her childrens theatre, while Dayne departs for the set of his latest blockbuster.
The other part of the story involves the Baxter family. John, the widowed patriarch of the family, knows who his firstborn son isthe one he and his wife had to give up for adoption before they married. He wants to tell his children, but he hesitates. He eventually begins the process of telling his children, one by one, the story of his firstborn son who was given up for adoption. But he stops short of the full truth: their long-lost brother is actually Hollywood star Dayne Matthews.
The two parallel plots converge, leaving the reader immensely satisfied at the end of the book and excited for the fifth and final book in the series. However, the teaser first chapter of the final book, included at the end of Family, left me rather upset and anxious for the conclusion to another bestselling series by this acclaimed author.
Kingsburys signature style is easy and pleasant prose, with just enough predictability to feel as comfortable as a favorite pair of slippers, but with enough plot twists and turns to keep the pages turning. Even though this is book four of the second book series about the Baxter family (none of which Id read), there were enough details to fill me in on what I had missed so I did not feel lost at all.
