Herman narrates her story by using an omniscient point of view. Characters are mostly three dimensional, and relationships between husbands and wives are portrayed as strong, healthy partnerships. Though they face much conflict in their relationship, Zoe and her husband Pierce are both strong examples of how trust is a key element in a lasting marriage.
The plot is centered on Zoe Broussard and her struggle to face the repercussions of her past deceit. Zoe, who is living under an assumed identity, becomes prey to a ruthless drug-dealer who insists that she owes him one hundred thousand dollars. When she is unable to meet the dealers financial demands, he kidnaps her best friend, Virginia Langley. With danger closing in on all sides, Zoe must face her lies and find a way to rescue her loved ones.
Whereas Zoe has built a life upon a foundation of deceit, she is sincerely burdened by her shameful past but often feels forced to lie. This weak personality trait allows for much growth throughout the story, and by the end of the book it is evident that Zoe is ready to take responsibility for her mistakes. Minor characters dont display any significant development, but are successful in displaying positive qualities, such as trust, loyalty, and love. Ultimately, all characters actions support the words of John 8:32. "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." From first to final chapter, Herman does her best to produce a thriller that contains enough twists and turns to keep readers turning pages. While the author succeeds on some scale, there are instances when the plot feels somewhat tangled and overdone. Character viewpoint contributes to some of the confusion, as the author often writes from four differing perspectives within a single chapter.
Overall, Herman's work is a pleasant thrill that will provide entertainment with light intrigue. This is a good choice for inspirational fiction fans who are looking for just a taste of suspense. Kari Lynn Travis, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A shameful past, a dangerous lieMay 30, 2014Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4"False Pretenses" is a Christian suspense novel. The story is about a woman who is ashamed of her past and so she took a new identity and began a new life. But now someone is threatening to tell about her past, and she's afraid people will reject her when they discover who she was and that she's lied to them. This is the first book in a series. Some characters are apparently from a previous series, and they talk about past events. That vague information might spoil some of the suspense in that previous series, but I don't actually know if it will.
The suspense is created by relationship tensions and from physical danger. The characters were interesting, varied, and complex. I guessed whodunit and who the blackmailer was long before Zoe caught on, but it was realistic that she wouldn't guess. The story wasn't really about guessing whodunit, anyway. The Christian element was mainly provided by a minor character who was wronged by Zoe. This woman showed Christ's love and encouraged Zoe to be honest with her husband and friends--though Zoe didn't take that advice too well.
There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this suspenseful novel.

i blog 4 books4 Stars Out Of 5Kept Me GuessingAugust 30, 2012i blog 4 booksFalse Pretenses was a great introduction to Kathy Herman. The suspense was fairly intense, and I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. Plus, the plot moved along quickly, which really kept me flipping the pages. Zoe Broussard was a great main character, and I really enjoyed getting to know her. The author did a great job writing about such a unique and iconic location as New Orleans, but I wasn't crazy about the Cajun dialect. I know the author was using it to give a realistic flair to the dialogue, but if I'm unfamiliar with the words, I don't like having to stop and start to check the glossary. Other than that, though, I really did love the book, and it whet my appetite for the next novel in the series! [4 stars]
I received a free copy of this book from David C. Cook in exchange for my fair and honest review.
