Set in tenth century Clwyd (Whales, bordering England) this story sweeps you away to a time of honor, war and duty. Though at times the authentic language was difficult to follow, it truly sets the scene. The reader really feels the customs and life of these clans.
Anmair is given by her father in marriage in order to secure peace and bolster her people's strength to withstand Viking raids. Cadell aspired to be a monk, not a husband. But with his brothers killed in war, he is his father's only heir and it falls to his shoulders to claim this destiny. Thrown together into a marriage neither of them wanted, they soon have to rely on each other when crisis hits. Strong, fiery and determined, Anmir captivates Cadell and he learns he will go to any lengths necessary to save her.
Well-written and intriguing, this book keeps the pages turning. The plot is well-developed and despite a somewhat slow start the action escalates quickly and keeps the reader involved. The romance develops well, and the heat rating is sweet. The first of a series, each book will focus on items placed in a special ancestral box. I give this book 4.5 stars and look forward to the next one!
