Publisher's Description

From the bestselling author of It Happened at the Fair comes a historical love story about a lady doctor and a Texas Ranger who meet at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Saddled with a man’s name, the captivating Billy Jack Tate makes no apologies for taking on a man’s profession. As a doctor at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, she is one step closer to having her very own medical practice—until Hunter Scott asks her to give it all up to become his wife.

Hunter is one of the elite. A Texas Ranger and World’s Fair guard specifically chosen for his height, physique, character, and skill. Hailed as the toughest man west of any place east, he has no patience for big cities and women who think they belong anywhere but home…

Despite their difference of opinion on the role of women, Hunter and Billy find a growing attraction between them—until Hunter discovers an abandoned baby in the corner of a White City exhibit. He and Billy team up to make sure this foundling isn’t left in the slums of Chicago with only the flea-riddled, garbage-infested streets for a playground. As they fight for the underprivileged children in the Nineteenth Ward, an entire Playground Movement is birthed. But when the Fair comes to an end, one of them will have to give up their dream.

Will Billy exchange her doctor’s shingle for the domesticated role of a southern wife, or will Hunter abandon the wide open spaces of home for a life in the “gray city,” a woman who insists on being the wage earner, and a group of ragamuffins who need more than a playground for breathing space?

Very disappointing. This book seems to be trying to cater to two different audiences; Christian and secular. I kept expecting the tone of inspiring lust to change, but instead it continued to build. It made me very uncomfortable to read. I kept thinking about my best friend that I share books with, who then passes them to her teenage daughter. I would never want her to read this book.

Ch. 4 Pg., 32 She would start her new job with a new gown, a new hat, new gloves, new stockings, and the most wicked undergarments shed ever owned. Her risqu undergarments get referenced repeatedly throughout the novel.

The story takes place at the 1893 Worlds Fair, the same as the first book in the series, but only once do we glimpse the original characters from book one, so they are both stand-alone books. Dr. Billy Jack Tate has hung her shingle in the exciting town of Chicago, and is pushing the odds to attempt to run her own practice. She has an outstanding resume, but people are prejudice against female doctors. Hunter is a Texas Ranger on loan to the Fair. The story is ripe for an enjoyable diversion, and exploration as they get to know each other. Instead, this book delves deeply into the deplorable conditions of the west side tenements, the disgusting jails, where children are kept with men who have syphilis and half their tongues are missing, and hookers, and other criminals, while they all share the same cup for drinking, and trough for relieving themselves. Thats just one example of the details shared! The two main characters are constantly drawn to each other, and think about each other provocatively. Ch. 53 Pg. 404 Shaking her head, she started soaping and washing her instruments. He admired the view, mesmerized by the jiggling that occurred while she scrubbed. So much of this was throughout the book, it became an annoying distraction. In addition, there is rape, and murder of innocents. Just because the author found these deplorable conditions in her research, does not mean we, the readers, want to sit back to enjoy a pleasant evening reading, and be slapped in the face with all of it. I did finish the book, in order to give it my best effort, but I can not, in good conscience, recommend this book.

Deeanne is one of my favorite writers even though it's been a while since I've read one of her books. She does a great job of pulling you into the story and making you feel for the characters. This one was so interesting that I even read the 'Author's Note', which was seven pages! The note tells about Chicago at that time and enlightens about that time period, very interesting. This book comes highly recommended from me.

I purchased a print copy of this book but I also got an e-copy from Net Galley in return for an honest review.

Fun, Historical, Touching, and very Teaching story!!!

Even though our Texas Ranger was hand picked for his manly figure, he hasn't seen it all until he met our Doctor Billy Jack Tate with very feminine figure but with mind manly enough to even rival his. try and guard that woman. The whole Fair ground want getting in as much trouble a her. But no matter how much of man's world we try to take over we will still be women and this book i perfect eye opener. we are engineered from inside to be women, we will never be truly happy until we accept our God-given role in life. So at the end of this book ms Billy isn't making a sacrifice she is taking a step in the right direction.

I was very touched by all the poverty and the straggle against it. the injustice in imprisonment was disconcerting and i'm glad for the people who were key to making changes in our government system. Deeanne Gist did exceptional job with this story and i believe its her best one yet!!!

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from Howard Books, through netgalley, in exchange for my honest opinion.

Absolutely loved this book. Deanne, never disappoints! The scenes are so real with the characters demonstrating a full range of emotion, with engaging dialog. The story is told with timeless details from the Chicago World's Fair and pulls the reader into its' grip before they realize it. I love the way Deanne blends God's love with romance history, and humor.
