Ryle's chief aim is to help the reader to know Christ. He also has another object in view. He writes so that his commentaries can be read aloud to a group. There are many other fuller commentaries on the Gospels, but no others make such compelling listening - whether it be in the family, in neighborhood groups, or over the air - as those of J. C. Ryle.

I purchased the four volume hard cover set about two years ago and I am so pleased with every volume. I read them aloud to my family each evening and we are nearly through all of Matthew. My 10 year old daughter and 9 year old son are very able to understand as we read and discuss. It has certainly given all of us a deeper understanding of the gospel of Matthew. I gladly give my highest recomendation. In an age when mainstream christian teaching is largely humanistic, I am so thankful that precious volumes like this are being reprinted. Bishop Ryle understood that the glory of God is our highest aim.
I've been using JC Ryle's Expository Thoughts on the gospels, though I only have Matthew and Luke on my shelf but nevertheless I can assure other users of the excellent expositions and comments made. Despite its size, JC Ryle was able to concisely and exhaustively exposed the message of the gospels in subject or topical sbudivission. This makes the work more user friendly and thought provoking for the reader. The size does not compromise the thoughts exposed which are very handy and that makes me more confident that I can prepare the sermons or preaching with substantive discussions.
