Product Description

A comprehensive curriculum that reflects the multiple facets of the United States! Help your students appreciate the richness of American history through the words and experiences of those who lived it. Removing the cut-and-dry, past-tense monotony that so many textbooks convey, Exploring America lets the people that experienced history, tell it-with all the uncertainty, hopes and fears of humanity. The importance of faith is highlighted, from the faith that inspired the Pilgrims to the Abolitionists during the Civil War, challenging students to see the word of God behind the culture. Sidebar notes often give unique biographical sketches, notes on what was occurring simultaneously around the world, and additional historical background.

Material is provided for an entire school year's worth of American History, English (American Literature and Composition) and Bible (Issues in American Christianity). Volumes 1 & 2 have a total of 150 lessons divided into 30 units of five lesson each, from Columbus to the present day. Daily lessons generally include reading the lesson, a short writing assignment, Bible study question and a reminder to continue reading one of the literature pieces. Includes an 830 page, 2-volume student text, and 409-page collection of historical documents, famous speeches, and great American poems.

    Andreola Review

My son’s college English professor bragged that she also taught American history without war or religion! Modern education strives to rob our children of God, His values, and the desire to defend what they hold to be true. Ray Notgrass has the antidote to this trend. Using a 3-tier approach—History, English Literature/ Composition, and Bible—he challenges students to see and question the unfolding of historical events through the eyes of faith.

Names and dates are important. But history is better understood and more apt to be remembered within the context of ideas. What were the newsmakers of yesteryear thinking and reading? What were the popular stories of the day? The 409-page bonus softcover, American Voices, places some of the time’s most decisive documents, speeches, essays, hymns, poems, short stories, and biographical sketches right at your student’s fingertips. Mr. Notgrass’s poignant text in the student books delves deeply into cause-and-effect influences with special emphasis on the ethical and spiritual consequences of law, war, slavery, economy, education, culture, and much more. For English, students are immersed in redemptive period literature like Little Women, The Life of David Crockett, Up from Slavery, and Christy. The Bible lessons bring high schoolers’ worldview to maturity, allowing them to see the significance of faith in America, develop well-reasoned opinions, and boldly bear the mark of their Maker. This course respects the historical values of the Protestant Reformation.

This course is reading-intensive coupled with research and writing assignments, with the goal of securing knowledge. Quizzes and tests in the Exam Pack are therefore optional.

The teacher’s notes include a variety of ways the content can be used to meet your needs and credit requirements. This program can be used as a stand-alone history class or as a full year unit study for three subjects. 830 pages total, two softcovers from Notgrass.
