Informed theological guide to the Jewish foundations of the Christian faith

In this very readable sequel to his popular book Our Father Abraham - which has sold more than 70,000 copies - Marvin Wilson illuminates theological, spiritual, and ethical themes of the Hebrew scriptures that directly affect Christian understanding and experience.

Exploring Our Hebraic Heritage draws from both Christian and Jewish commentary in discussing such topics as thinking theologically about Abraham, understanding the God of Israel and his reputation in the world, and what it means for humans to be created in God's image. Wilson calls for the church to restore, renew, and protect its foundations by studying and appreciating its origins in Judaism.

Designed to serve as an academic classroom text or for use in personal or group study, the book includes hundreds of questions for review and discussion.

Endorsements

A rare literary gem. . . Marvin Wilson's mastery of both Christian and Judaic texts, theologies, and traditions is nothing short of staggering. Equally, however, this book is easily accessible for students and seekers, not just academics; for congregants and parishioners, not just clergy. Jews, atheists, and Gentiles alike can all find their way into and through this truly informative and inspirational work. . . Here is reading for the mind, the heart, and the soul.
-Rabbi Baruch HaLevi

As a historical religion, Christianity must own its Jewish origins and live up to the best of that heritage. Marvin Wilson, a pioneer in evangelical-Jewish relations, makes a compelling argument for renewing Christian faith by recovering our Hebraic heritage. If only there were more like him, we could have a healthier church.
-David Neff

Masterful. . . Wilson builds on his previous tour de force, Our Father Abraham, to deepen our understanding of the Hebraic roots of Christian theology. There is no doubt that this work will impact the thinking of yet another generation of Christian readers, fostering Jewish-Christian understanding and spiritual renewal in the church.
-R. Steven Notley

For two thousand years, we have longed for a Christian scholar of Judaism as sensitive and knowledgeable as Marvin Wilson, and his work fulfills our hopes. Insightful and deeply learned, this book is a remarkable example of a Christian theology that affirms Judaism with respect and appreciation.
-Susannah Heschel

Editorial Reviews

Intelmin.org
"Marvin Wilson, in his excellent and timely book Exploring our Hebraic Heritage: A Christian Theology of Roots and Renewal, outlines for the reader exactly what it means to get back to a proper understanding and application of God's Word. . . . Full of theological insight, excellent references to both Jewish and Christian scholars, and most importantly, biblically based, this book is a valuable resource for those desiring to better understand, study, and apply Scripture."

Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society
"The basic task of Exploring our Hebraic Heritage is to prove that Judaism and Christianity can mutually enrich each other if properly understood. Marvin Wilson is . . . well qualified to present a thorough case for renewing Christian faith by rethinking our Hebraic heritage."

Congregational Libraries Today
"Packed with information in a reader-friendly format. People who are reluctant to tackle books on theology will be pleasantly surprised by this one. . . . Exploring Our Hebraic Heritage is appropriate for clergy and will be an excellent addition to Christian history collections in congregational and academic libraries. Because each of the 14 chapters ends with questions, it is also an excellent choice for small group study."

Exploring Our Hebraic Heritage: A Christian Theology of Roots and Renewal
    October 13, 2014
    Raz Pesher
In this short (272 pages plus bibliography & index) Wilson expresses well-researched and thought-out answers to essential questions involving Jewish Christian relations. Wilson is fearless and does not sugar-coat the long-term individual and group historical effects of antisemitism for both Jews and Christians.

Wilson states: "Today, owing to an increasing openness in Christian Jewish relations, a remarkable change is underway. Increasingly, a sincere desire to understand the other has resulted in mutual respect and self-correction."..."This current rediscovery of Jesus the Jew could come about only through an honest assessment of the past, social change, and a new inter-religious encounter that is willing to take risks, readjust attitude, and right wrongs."

"Exploring Our Hebraic Heritage" is based not only upon Wilson's life-time studies but his practical work in Jewish Christian relations with his students, Jewish & Christian communities, and Holocaust survivors including Sonia Weitz. Rather than dwelling upon what separates Jews and Christians, Wilson chooses to facilitate education, dialogue, understanding, and acceptance between Christians and Jews.

    The Christian Perspective:

"As any one of Marvin Wilson's countless students could tell you, the treasury of learning, insight, and wisdom found in this book emerges from a lifetime of integrity and faithfulness. This long-awaited sequel immediately takes its place alongside his best-selling "Our Father Abraham." James Whitman

    The Jewish Perspective

"For two thousand years, we have longed for a Christian scholar of Judaism as sensitive and knowledgeable as Marvin Wilson, and his work fulfills our hopes. Insightful and deeply learned, this book is a remarkable example of a Christian theology that affirms Judaism with respect and appreciation." Susannah Heschel
