Andreola Review

Prepare yourself for an exciting year of space exploration! Children ages 6 to 12 (and adults, too!) will enjoy this faith-affirming look at God’s creation in the heavens. Kids can relate to Fulbright’s lively text as she shares her personal love of astronomy in 14 fact-filled lessons. The hands-on assignments and projects are fun, thought-provoking, and memorable. (And isn’t that the point of learning—that we remember what we learn?) Children will also have lots of opportunities to tell back in their own words (narrate) what impresses them about each lesson. Filled with color photos and illustrations, this book discusses creation, the solar system, stars, planets, galaxies, and space travel with depth, good humor, and creative—if not stellar—flare! Includes materials list for each lesson, answer key for narrative questions, and a course website for help. 176 pages, hardcover from Apologia.

This is a great text for children in the elementary years for a science curriculum. I bought this for use with my 5 yr old and it is a little over his head. I think I will save it to use next year, but we have read the first 2 chapters and it is very good, very God-centered.

I could not be happier with this text. It is easily readable and pulls in plenty of Christian theology, scripture, and history. I have been reading the text aloud to my six year old son who requested astronomy for science this year. The experiments are simple enough to do and the review questions every few pages help to break each chapter into lessons. Minimal preparation required (only for experiment days -- Saturdays for us). My son loves the pictures and we spend a lot of time in discussion prompted by the text.

My 7 year old has been wanting to study Astronomy since he was 5 years old. I thought it would be too difficult for his age, and I wasn't too interested in the subject matter. We finally gave it a try, and this book is excellent! My 4 year old is enjoying it too! It's made me even more amazed about God's perfect design!

This is a great astronomy book for elementary age students written from a Biblical world-view. The author is thorough and makes the lessons interesting for the students and the adult as well. There are projects that are simple to do, and they help to reinforce the lessons. The information included is easy to understand for younger students, but also includes more in-depth information for the older students. The text is written to the student, as if someone were telling about the topic. My three boys (ages 8,6,4) are excited about science and have loved both the text and the projects.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Jeannie Fulbright
Submitted: July 04, 2004

Tell us a little about yourself.  My name is Jeannie Fulbright. I am a veteran homeschooling mom with four children. I am a graduate of the University of Texas. Though I minored in science, my emphasis was in writing. I write for many homeschool publications. I also speak at homeschool conferences and smaller homeschool groups. My husband and I live with our family in Georgia.

What was your motivation behind this project?  The Lord placed upon my heart a calling to write this series when I couldn't find Charlotte Mason style "living books" that taught science from the Biblical Creationist perspective. I also wanted science to be easier to fit into a busy homeschooling day. One only needs to pick up the book and begin reading; no teacher's manual, no additional resources are needed. One book is all the whole family needs to become amateur astronomers!

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My hope is that Christians will be blessed by the God-glorifying text that continually points them to their Creator. I pray that students will be grounded in a the thoroughly biblical worldview presented throughout this book. My dream is that the solid foundation formed and the strengthening of their faith through this will arm students to be defenders of the faith as they enter the battle zone.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  This book was written to give homeschool parents a way to teach in-depth creation science to all their children at once. My desire was to write a book that you could cuddle up on the couch with and read to every elementary student in your home at once. The older students will grasp more than the younger students; but they will all learn and enjoy science at their own level. And the information is interesting enough for even high school students to learn (mom and dad too!). The text is written in a conversational style that is engaging to the reader. Concepts such as nuclear fusion are explained in a way that even a five year old could understand. And what a delight to hear your five year old explaining to his grandparents how nuclear fusion is evidence for Creation! The activities are often separated between younger students and older students. Every lesson begins with reading from the text. After that the child works on his notebook, which is essentially the creating of his own astronomy book. Then a creative exercise to help with retention is introduced. Every lesson ends with a relevant hands-on project. Spending your science year studying astronomy will both challenge and bless your family. Your students will come away with a deeper understanding of God's universe and the evidence therein for Creation. Your faith will be strengthened as you see God's perfect design and the beauty He placed in His starry hosts. Dr. Jay Wile, my editor and publisher, has done an excellent job of tightening up all scientific concepts and making the book beautiful.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Please email me with any questions or comments. It is always such a blessing to hear from you!
