Christianity's roots, distinctiveness, and cultural implicationsare highlighted in this multi-dimensional resource, providing anintroductory understanding of the richness of the faith andchurch.
JAMES P. ECKMAN (ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD, University of Nebraska at Lincoln) is the president of Grace University in Omaha, Nebraska, as well as a professor of history and biblical studies. An ordained minister, his specialty is historical theology. In addition to hosting a weekly radio program, Issues in Perspective, he also performs dramatic monologues on figures from church history.
In this volume, author James Eckman first walks readers through the defining moments, theological process, and institutional development of the church---from the day of Pentecost, through the Reformation and Enlightenment, and to the modern age. He then examines a variety of popular belief systems such as Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Roman Catholicism, and specific cults and then offers, in contrast, a compelling look at Christianitys distinctives. Finally, Eckman presents the important difference between ethics and morals and suggests a modern-day ethical strategy that views hot-button issues like abortion, euthanasia, bioethics, war, capital punishment, and the environment through the lens of Scripture.
With brief chapters and thought-provoking questions, this book is perfect for personal or group study. It provides an introductory understanding of the richness of the faith and the church for you or your small group.

In fact there are three books in one. The author had first published the themes separetedly. In not so many pages he get the most to explain facts, to define borders and to state a balanced Christian and Biblical position. It is so far a very good introduction.

I bought this book expecting a more detailed description of Church History and was disappointed that this was more of an overview aimed at perhaps a high school level.
I would recommend the book for people who know very little about church history and want an introduction, or a starting point for further investigation. However, for people who already have a general idea of Church History there will be little in this book that they do not know.
For myself, I am still looking for a definitive guide to Church History and this book has not advanced my search very far at all.
