Homeschool Specialist Review
The activity book includes work sheets and review pages for concepts and units that can be used as quizzes or tests. The teacher's guide provided me with weekly lesson notes, background information, book lists, answer keys, and activity ideas such as timelines, mapping, study projects, writing assignments, research topics, and even review games for family nights. You could never do all the supplemental work within this curriculum, but it sure was fun trying!
My family and I loved using this resource because it made history so interesting. Even studying World War II gave us an excuse to watch one of our favorite movies, The Sound of Music, together.

We are towards the end of the lessons this year and my daughter is asking if she can do extra lessons each week. The teacher guide provides tons of extension activities and weblinks- we even tried our hand at making hardtack as a part of experiencing a sailor's meal. The reader is in a story format and she will read it out loud each week and is able to complete the notebooking in the activity book on her own. We extend lessons she is extra interested in with documentaries and museum trips. Another reviewer cited being required to memorize names and dates- but we haven't experienced this. There is a timeline that is optional and for us just serves to keep the events in perspective. Perhaps the other reviewer insists on a closed book for the unit reviews? We have had lots of fun with this curriculum and look forward to using Vol. 2 next year.
M. McCombs5 Stars Out Of 5June 22, 2010M. McCombsAfter a very long search, I finally purchased this course for my daughter. She's doing very well with it. It involves a lot of memorization, but this is typical for early history courses. The research questions provided for each unit greatly expand the course beyonf the memorization.

It was very easy to follow and we enjoyed it very much. It is very easy to adapt this curriculum to your child's learning style! We look forward to using the 2nd level!
Amanda1 Stars Out Of 5March 16, 2010AmandaI chose this book because we enjoyed The Mystery of History so much and they have the same publisher. This was a mistake. The text is very dry and focuses on memorizing dates of battles and names of generals. By the end of the year, my kids had forgotten all the dates and names and really didn't know anything new about American History.
