The Explode the Code series provides comprehensive phonics instruction, giving students the skills they need to read words, phrases, sentences, and stories by themselves.
Explode the Code Book 5 provides students with an introduction to word endings, word families, digraphs, and 3-letter blends. Skills addressed through a variety of encoding, decoding, and writing exercises include: sounds of -ed, words ending in -ey, word families (all-alk, old-olt-oll, ild-ind), word letter blends (thr-, shr-, scr-, str-, spr-, spl-), and qu words. Students will also practice blending sounds to read and write one-syllable words that include diagraphs and long vowel sounds. Reviews are included throughout, and a posttest is provided.

If you're looking for a parent- and kid-friendly phonics workbook, you've found it in this series. New phonics skills are introduced in each workbook. The Get Ready books teach students how to say and write consonants. The short stories in the Beyond books develop understanding and critical-thinking skills. The "1/2" books provide further practice activities. Teacher's guides feature detailed lesson plans and address key principles. My daughter enjoyed the pictures drawn by kids, and she loved using these workbooks to reinforce her newly acquired reading skills. Grades K to 4. Approx. 100 pages each, softcovers from Educators Publishing. -- Cindy

I use it has a supplement to First Language Lessons, All About Spelling, and Christian Liberty Press Phonics A, B, & C. I think they get more out of it when I use the exercises in the Teacher's Guide, but I do not always get to them, and I do not do all of the TG exercises-- LOL ! Sometimes they finish three lessons and THEN we do a "crash course" of some the exercises from the Teacher's Guide as a sort of review, quiz, or "test". I only do this delay, because they finish faster than I have the time to do the lessons and I don't want them waiting on me. I have not used the second edition.

a special mom with a special boy5 Stars Out Of 5Wonderful curriculum!December 8, 2014a special mom with a special boyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I homeschool our special needs son and was looking for something that would be a great fit for our homeschool. After searching for a while, I found this curriculum but was a little skeptical because of the lack of "recent" reviews. I am however extremely glad that I did not let that stop me from purchasing the curriculum. These books have been the BEST fit for our homeschool. They work well with neuro typical as well as special needs children. Each lesson is broken down into manageable pieces that are easy to understand. Our son can do the work independently and is able to retain the information. I am so glad that I found this program, it has been an invaluable addition to our school day. I would recommend purchasing the explode the code books as well as the beyond the code series, you will not be disappointed.
