The Explode the Code series provides comprehensive phonics instruction, giving students the skills they need to read words, phrases, sentences, and stories by themselves.
Explode the Code Book 1 provides students with a review of consonants and introduces short vowel sounds. Skills addressed through a variety of encoding, decoding, and writing exercises include: short a, short a with final consonant sounds, short i, short u, short e, and short o. Students will also practice blending sounds to read and write CVC words. Reviews are included throughout, and both a pretest (which measures student familiarity with consonant sounds, a prerequisite to this book) and a posttest are provided.

Homeschool Specialists' Spotlights
If you're looking for a parent- and kid-friendly phonics workbook, you've found it in this series. New phonics skills are introduced in each workbook. The Get Ready books teach students how to say and write consonants. The short stories in the Beyond books develop understanding and critical-thinking skills. The "1/2" books provide further practice activities. Teacher's guides feature detailed lesson plans and address key principles. My daughter enjoyed the pictures drawn by kids, and she loved using these workbooks to reinforce her newly acquired reading skills. Grades K to 4. Approx. 100 pages each, softcovers from Educators Publishing. -- Cindy
Judy5 Stars Out Of 5BEST for phonics!August 26, 2015JudyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5After trying a few different approaches to learning how to read...I decided to try this product. At first I was hesitant because it looked very poorly done...but after getting the books, and looking at them....having my son work with them....I LOVE them! Within 4 lessons he was reading! I highly recommend them!!
teaching4MOAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Easy to useMay 6, 2015teaching4MOAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5We started out Explode the Code with the books A, B and C. This was a great follow on to those books. If your child doesn't do well with recognizing the alphabet or pronouncing, I'd suggest starting with the A, B and C books. We did use this book at a kindergarten level, though the book does not make you feel it has to be attached to a specific grade. In book one vowels are introduced as well as learning to read and spell three letter words. There is a comprehension element to the book where the student looks at a picture and decides which sentence is describing the picture. There is also a "post-test" located at the back of the book.
We worked on 2 pages a day to keep a steady pace which would give about 47 days of work. We also used the 1 1/2 book following along side this book. (see that book for separate review)
I suggest this book for anyone who is homeschooling young ones, but also to anyone who has a child AT a school and needs some additional phonics assistance at home.
We do have the teacher guide to go with this (it is very inexpensive) however you can use this book totally independent. I would say the price is a little high because we would use Book 1 and 2 and the 1/2 books in one school year.
We do use other products to reinforce what is learned with the Explode the Code.
homeschool mama5 Stars Out Of 5Finally!!December 12, 2014homeschool mamaI have a "reluctant reader" who loves to be read to but is very resistant to learning how to read. This is the 3rd curriculum that we've tried w/ him this year, & we finally hit the jackpot! He LOVES this, & even asks to do this first before anything else! Awesome!!
Stonewall School4 Stars Out Of 5Explode the Code 1October 3, 2014Stonewall SchoolQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I really like this book and am using it as a complement to The Ordinary Parents Guide to Reading. My only complaint would be that some of the pictures are somewhat vague looking but otherwise it gets the job done!
bowman55 Stars Out Of 5Explode the Code 1August 23, 2014bowman5Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My kids LOVE Explode the Code!!! Before I began homeschooling 3 years ago, my children attended public school. My 1st grader at the time was stuggling in reading terribly. When I decided to homeschool, I found these Explode the Code treasures! Well, he has taken off in reading and is now on Book 5 and LOVES it!! He can't wait to do school and I know it is because the confidence he has gained with Explode the Code. I have started my other younger children with Explode the Code as well and they feel the same way!! I would highly recommend this series of books!
