Allaboutschool4 Stars Out Of 5Explode the CodeSeptember 11, 2014AllaboutschoolQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I like the Explode the Code series. I have used them for several years now. However, I am finding that once the books go into compound words, the difficulty level raises more than it should from the last book. I am supplementing with other material until my son is more prepared. The books are in black and white and could be more colorful, but I don't really mind. As with all phonics books, sometimes the pictures are a little hard to distinguish what it is supposed to be. All in all, this is a good series and meets our needs quite well.
Laura Halgund5 Stars Out Of 5November 30, 2007Laura HalgundWith many children to homeschool I found these series of Explode the Code a wonderful way to to teach phonics in a relaxed way. After the child knows his letters and sounds, and has learned to blend simple three letter short voweled words, then the child can work four pages per day on his own. I like the child to bring the work to me so I can check it and sign "Mom". Its a good idea to do the 1/2 books for extra practice. This works well for children with a bit of dyslexia, since he is working on his own, he must work it out with no one in the way. Someone "teaching" demands, "What does this say? What is this sound? Which further confuses things. This way the child can look at the picture and have to spell it out on his own sequentially. I also recommend IEW for learning composition, Singapore Math, and Saxon. All easy to use, all very effective, all no nonsense programs.
