There are quite a few extra activities to reinforce each lesson that aren't in the student books. I will definately continue to purchase the corresponding teacher's guides as we progress through the series.

The ideas for instruction are almost entirely classroom-based. A few good ideas if you have no education background, but otherwise, you can get the books without the teacher's guide and save your money on this one.
Mary Ann S.5 Stars Out Of 5February 5, 2010Mary Ann S.Explode the Code is an excellent tool for my two boys (ages 7 & 8). It uses a systematic method of introducing phonics skills. The teacher's guide (TG) is a must. It has valuable lessons that are short and easy to implement. The student books are great, but the true teaching comes from the teacher's guide. The TG uses a variety of approaches (auditory exercises, segmenting words, chalkboard mini-lessons) to train your child to discriminate sound patterns, blends, digraphs, and word endings. The best part is they can't wait to do it. Every morning my boys exclaim, "Can we do Explode the Code first today?"
Q: How many Explode the Code books do people typically use in a school year for one child? This is my 1st year homeschooling. My son is starting 2nd grade. Thanks!
Generally, two will be used each year. However, if the student masters the material, you could advance them quicker through the series.
