Entering college can be both a fantastic and frightening experience. Matthew Paul Turners Everything You Need to know Before College uses a Christian perspective to show students what to expect during this life-changing journey. Class registration, dating, health, extracurricular activities, budgeting, volunteering, safety, time management and a multitude of other topics are all addressed in this book. Turner interlaces his serious information with humorous tidbits, irrelevant ramblings, and even silly poems.Having already graduated from college, I can honestly say Turners book accurately reflects my own college experience. As Turner explains, it is sometimes difficult to strike a balance between fun time and studyingtoo much of either can make college unbearable. The book also explores some of the important things that college students may not consider first off. For example, the importance of buying flip flops to wear in communal showers and journaling on a regular basis.In addition to being informative, Turner is truly funny in an odd and random way. For example, during one of his concluding lists of important points from the chapter, Turner decides to throw in one completely off topic point for humor: Watch My Name is Earl on NBC. This has absolutely nothing to do with the chapter on wellness, but it makes for a random chuckle. Perfect timing! I picked this book to review because my son is currently in his Senior year of high school. He has been homeschooled all his life and I was hoping this book would help him (and me) prepare physically and mentally for the big adjustment that is awaiting him in college. I was really pleased with the way the heavy subjects like sex, drugs, alcohol, etc. were discussed - in a tactful yet somehow light manner. Never preachy but definitely making the point. The author, Matthew Paul Turner, has a strange obsession with the TV series, A Full House, but is quite hilarious throughout the book. Here is a funny little example: "I believe each of you, no matter your major, school or intelligence level, can find success at college. Success is why you're reading this book, correct? That, and the fact that your mother or father just handed it to you and said "Read this book." You probably looked at him or her and said, "Why should I?" And then your parent looked at you and said , "Because I got it on sale at Wal-mart, and I believe it will really help you get prepared for college." I'm not offended by your initial reaction to my book. I admit, I've written a somewhat geeky book."I don't think his book is geeky, Quirky, yes. Geeky, no. Throughout the book are bullet points, lists, checklists, comments from other students, and interesting college stories. I really liked the Bible verse sections in each chapter titled "Four verses from Psalm 16" or "Half a verse from Proverbs 17 that every college student should know."Without a doubt, the author is the best part of this book. He presents ordinary information in a lighthearted, comical way while telling high school/college students what they really need to hear but would probably tune out any other adult. I highly recommend this book for any parent who is interested in helping their child embrace the joys of college life while avoiding the pitfalls. September 7, 2010

This is a great book!!! I am entering my Junior year in high school and I am starting to visit christian colleges. It covers pretty much everything while offering scripture. Matthew Paul Turner makes this book so funny and relatable, I could barely put it down. It's a must read!!! He is so relatable to high school kids!!!! June 12, 2009
