Ruth Graham has written six books including bestselling, In Every Pew Sits a Broken Heart (Zondervan 2004) and award-winning, Step into the Bible (Zonderkidz 2007). Ruth is an experienced conference speaker and Bible teacher known for her honesty and authenticity. As founder and President of Ruth Graham & Friends, Ruth seeks to minister Gods grace and comfort to those who are hurting and feel alone as well as to equip those who desire to help those who are hurting. Ruth is the third child of Ruth and Billy Graham. She worked in publishing for 13 years as an acquisitions editor and for five years as donor relations coordinator for Samaritans Purse. She spent one year as Major Gifts Officer at Mary Baldwin College where in 2000 she graduated cum laude and received the Outstanding Adult Student award. She has an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Eastern University. Ruth has three grown children and six grandchildren. She and her husband, Greg, and his three sons live in Virginia.
Throughout the book, Ruth highlights verses that apply to her circumstances and struggles. She encourages readers in similar circumstances to praise God and strengthen their assurance of Gods involvement in their lives. Ruths experiences are shared in small pieces, with her most current struggles toward the end of the book. Ruth completed an undergraduate degree in religion and communications at Mary Baldwin College, fulfilling her desire to graduate before she turned fifty at the millennium.
Ruth shares with the reader her rededication to trusting God when she considered her failures. Commit again to trusting God, and ask him to give you the courage and ability to keep trusting him. Losing faith is so human. God knows our weaknesses. Again, as David wrote, He is mindful that we are but dust. (Psalm 103:14). Remember, God is not chiding you for being dust. He loves you all the more for your weakness, and he longs to give you his strength (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). Your job is to keep a right attitude and to continue cooperating as God does his work in you.
It is evident within these pages that Ruth seeks to better her personal relationship with God. She encourages the reader to converse with Him and depend on Him as well.
In Every Pew Sits a Broken Heart addresses the extremely difficult subject of divorce. Though divorce is widespread, its painful to those affected and not regarded lightly by any. Its difficult to write an uplifting message about divorce and its aftermath. Nonetheless, God does have a plan for those who divorce. This book focuses on comfort, reassuring bible passages, and contemplations for women who divorce. Ruth claims in the Impulse of Isolation chapter that she is still learning the balance between wise privacy and healthy openness. This insecure balance between the two is prevalent throughout the book. In some instances this causes a lack of clarity or anticipated emotions within the revealed experiences of the author.
This book contains rich pertinent Bible verses for women whove experienced divorce. Ruths pre- and post-divorce struggles are not uncommon, and relevant for today. This book would be a down-to-earth testimony for any divorced woman who desires a consistent and comfortable relationship with God. Though Ruths parsed divorce story is not victorious in all directions, some solutions dont provide great gain. However, God is always victorious. The relevant scripture provided in this book may help divorced women readers keep on the pathway of salvation. Kate Fausak, Christian Book Previews.com
Once a broken heart5 Stars Out Of 5A baring of the soul and era of tremendous growthMarch 10, 2015Once a broken heartIn this book, Ruth lays her most difficult time of her life out for all to glean from the lessons the Lord taught her during her brokeness. I admire her for her honesty, her willingness to share her personal shame over wrong decisions and subsequent redemption.
The lessons in this book are priceless. I love the layout of the chapters. A beautifully written manual.
A couple reviewers have expressed the concern regarding her immature decisions, lack of accountability and 'riding on the coattails of her father's fame'. My take on this is that prior to the realization and acknowledgement of her husbands infidelities, she had led a very sheltered life and publically was always concious of her every move and how they might be interpreted by an unforgiving world. The years that followed were an era of tremendous growth on many levels and am thankful she was willing to share. I, for one, highly recommend this book and think it would be an excellent choice for a life group dicussion!!
Claudia1 Stars Out Of 5February 20, 2010ClaudiaI was given this book by a Christian counselor to read during a time when our family was going through an enormous crisis. Hoping it would be an encouragement to my soul and spirit, instead it left me angry and confused. In her book, Ms. Graham comes across as a spoiled girl who never grew up and finds ways to place the blame for her life's struggles on everyone else. Her attitude is one of denying accountability and finding excuses for her less-than-mature behavior. I think this book - and her ministry - has received much acclaim due to her riding on the coattails of her father's fame. When I returned this book to my counselor I relayed my opinion to her. Her reply: "That's exactly what I thought, too." She no longer recommends this book for Christians - or anyone, for that matter - who are struggling with the trials that "come so that your faithof greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by firemay be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
