Great leather wrapped around a shoddy text block
August 28, 2012
The new ESV 2011 text is amazing and Crossway's thinline editions of bibles have always been an obviously great hit. When I saw how cheap they were selling these editions in "cowhide" leather I couldn't help but leap upon one, and what better and more casual to carry around than beautiful chestnut brown? When I first took it out of the box it smelled amazing. The leather was MUCH darker than in the photo, but I actually quite prefer it to the reddish one shown in the photo. The leather is THICK and beautifully pebbled with red and brown flecks. This leather has to be seen in the sun to be truly appreciated. It sparks to life within the sun's light revealing it's glorious color. The leather is rather stiff, probably due to it's thickness, but being leather lined it will soften up much with time. I have used mine almost exclusively for a month and it is incredibly soft now. The problem with this bible is the text block, LOTS of wrinkling in the gutter, cheap feeling paper, and when flipping through the pages one must be weary lest the pages resist and assert themselves into the upright position, remaining so until pushed down. Overall a nice bible that will last a long time. Nothing compared to cambridge or R.L. Allan's editions of the ESV, but still nicer than any bonded leather or "genuine" leather bible.
I was really let down. First of all, the cover was so dark that I thought they accidentally sent me a black one. The pages are cheap looking and the format is similar (if not the same exact format) of the much cheaper regular thinline. Yes, the spine of the Bible is absolutely gorgeous, which is great, but for the value I wish I would have bought just a bonded thinline.
