Technology is dumb, it just does what the programmer has set in code. So how does one review the Bible? The only avenue is the construction of the volume and any defects will only show up after time and use. Of course there are the additional text contributions, maps and commentaries but who purchasing a study Bible will have gone through enough of the former to give an evaluation? A non-scholar will only give a superficial opinion and the Biblical scholar will take time to evaluate a number of the extras to determine if there is a bias in them or some error continued. Then again there may be no errors noticed.
I got this study Bible from my wife the day I graduated basic training. I had the personal size one before, so I knew what was in the text. I find many of the notes beneficial, however I did notice that some of the harder passages didn't have anything at all written about them; and this is fairly common throughout this Study Bible. I do recommend this study Bible as it is my daily study Bible, I use it for school (I am in Bible college.) However, i received the TruTone (leather look) and in just a few months the pages began to separate from the spine. So all I did is apply some rubber cement to the spine, got a Bible case, and have not had a problem with since (it is now about three years old.) I see a lot of complaints regarding the size of the text. I admit that it certainly is not big, but I don't have a problem reading it (and I have terrible vision (20/400 vision). Although it certainly is a larger size Bible, it a very nice looking Bible, my preacher preaches from the same Bible every Sunday. I do think that in some of the Old Testament books it could have more cross references/ parallel passages, the introductions to the books, and the commentaries themselves can be very helpful (most of the time). Overall, I would consider this a Great study Bible. I would give it 5 stars but I do not think it's perfect, so I give it 4. Now I do think that the quality of the Bible itself needs improvement; since it is so thick I feel that the TruTone versions do not provide enough structural integrity for this Bible. It is on the heavier side of Bibles, I would recommend getting a genuine leather, or a hardcover instead of the TruTone, that provides the pages and binding with a little more support. A truly great, comprehensive study Bible that I would recommend to anybody.
I ordered 4 of these Bibles engraved to give to Believers in a foreign country who dont have all the Bible study materials we do! They loved that it was personalized, in ESV so easier to read, and larger print. it is great to have all the Bible study notes right in your Bible to facilitate in-depth study!
