The ESV Student Study Bible is exceptional in every way. Let's start with the translation, which is the most important part of any bible. The ESV is an essentially literal translation; it is reliable and it is the most readable of the literal translations. The bible has a sewn binding, which means it will last for a long time. The black to white (and color) contrast on the pages is very good. This bible has very reliable study notes, short "Did You Know" articles, character profiles and more in-depth articles on salvation, the church, the reliability of scripture, Christian doctrine, Christian ethics , etc. It aslo has a very helpful glossary of biblical terms and a thorough concordance. The layout and use of colors makes the pages aesthetically pleasing. The size of the ESV Student Study Bible is more compact than many study bibles, yet readability is not sacrificed. In my opinion, this is one of the finest study bibles available at any price.
I highly suggest the ESV Student Study Bible because the text size is good, the notes are accurate and informative, and the Bible is aesthetically nice to look at because there is color on pretty much every page. I now have multiple Study Bibles but this was the first one I owned and to this day it is the best Study Bible I own. I prefer the ESV Student Study Bible over the ESV Study Bible, NIV Life Application Study Bible, and the NLT Chronological Life Application Study Bible (all of which I own).
-Text is a good size. I can't stand reading text that is too small and I can spend hours in this Bible because the text is a good reading size.
-The study notes are great. The notes in the ESV Student Study Bible are condensed versions of the long notes in the ESV Study Bible. I think the study notes help to provide understanding without being overwhelming and overly technical. Also, when there is a tough verse that Biblical scholars have interpreted multiple ways, the ESV Student Study Bible does a good job on presenting the multiple interpretations of the verse, I really liked that.
-Pages with color. I really like the color on the pages. I have Bibles where every page is a wall of black and white text, there is nothing wrong with that but I personally like some color on the pages.
-My only complaint is that the words of Christ are not in red but I knew that before I got this Bible.
Am I the only one who doesn't have eyes of an eagle? Why so many bibles print in 8 point font I will never understand. Please somebody print this in 10 point font, 11 would better the best for most of us, I'd live with 9 knowing that would be a stretch, but 8, no way :(
And what about the print bleeding through the pages, that makes it hard to read also.
This bible has an excellent layout, needs:
Bigger font 10pt, & thicker paper. Also 2 bookmarks to really add to it, & someone to make sure the INK is consistantly thick & dark!
As Minister of Education for 12 years I review many online and hard copy resources. The ESV Study Bible is by far the "Best" study bible I have ever used and is the best bible in my library and is my primary study bible.
