I love this translation. It flows when read out loud. Even with this type size, I will recommend this translation not necessarily this size. This is one of my favorites. I will order a study bible next.

I am very fond of the Crossway ESV Compact Bible, and carry it with me daily. The size is great for an already very full handbag, and the two-tone cover gives it a very current, attractive look. The red-lettering and golden page edges are both pluses that helped make this my favorite of the three pocket bibles that I own. Only one dissapointment: the font is very small, and although it is "readable", I don't understand why publisher wouldn't simply increase the type to at least 7 point. Doing so would not have increased the bible's size by more than a horizontal half-inch, but would certainly have decreased the strain on my not-so-young-anymore eyes. That one small change would have made for a truly exceptional pocket bible.

I enjoy reading the English Standard Version. This Compact TruTone Edition serves as my travel Bible whenever I go on vacation. The ESV is more accurate than its immediate predecessor, the Revised Standard Version, particularly in regard to the Messianic prophecies; and it is more worthy to stand in the Tyndale-King James tradition than its liberal cousin, the New Revised Standard Version of 1989. However, the ESV's language does not have the same beauty as the RSV; for example, it no longer uses archaic second-person words in addressing God (thee, thou, thy, art, hast, hadst, didst, etc.) Also, the ESV no longer uses the word "Brethren" in addressing the body of Christ, which was a nice feature of the RSV. In the end, the Revised Standard Version remains my favorite translation, but the English Standard Version is a close second. It is one of the best modern translations available, and no Christian home or church library should be without a copy of the ESV Bible!
