I am very impressed with the quality of this edition, especially considering the low price. The opacity of the paper, combined with the very even tone of the black ink throughout is excellent for an inexpensive Bible. I am generally not a fan of red letter editions, usually finding the shade of the reds pretty random and often too light, but this ESV's red letters are quite clear. The font size and line spacing will likely make for comfortable reading for many, although the center column references are quite small (a worthwhile tradeoff to keep the Bible at its current, convenient size in my estimation). The sewn binding, which I personally believe all Bibles should have, is a nice touch. This is the first Bible I have ever seen with a dust jacket (the actual Bible cover underneath is identical, including the gloss). For those that are curious, and can't tell from the sample pictures, the actual back cover of the Bible (and the dust jacket) is solid black. Overall, a very nice Bible for the price in a trustworthy translation.
A few months ago I picked up my first copy of this edition of the ESV from a local bookstore. A had a coupon and was looking for an ESV to add tot he other versions I use for sermon and BIble study preparation. The copy that I purchased has a beautiful genuine leather cover. I am VERY happy with it. The print and paper is even very good quality.
Due to the fact that I sometimes do some of my sermon preparation from my study at home I wanted to pick up a second copy - one for the office and one for home. The price is right, why not?
So, because the local bookstore did not have another copy, I order a copy from CBD. The service I received was great, as always, the Bible I received has a genuine leather cover but not the same quality. This one was very shiny and stiff. As I did some research to try to find out why one has a very nice high quality genuine leather cover that the other a less than high quality leather cover, after calling Crossway, I learned that the second copy I purchased from CBD (shiny and stiff leather cover) is from their first "batch" whereas the first copy I purchased from the local book store (high quality genuine leather) is from their second batch. What happened is they changed printing companies (from American to China) and with that change came the better higher quality genuine leather cover. I wish it were the other way around - from China to America with the better cover. I hope this helps.
Our adult Granddaughter asked for an ESV Bible for her Christmas gift. She was pleased with all the extra reference materials contained in the New Classic Reference Bible and said that it would be helpful in preparation of Sunday School lessons for Middle School students. Genuine leather is a good quality for longevity with much use.
I am very disappointed in the quality of the leather. I have a personal size large print Crossway Bible and the genuine leather is so soft on it and then this Bible's leather is very hard and creases when opened. It is hard to break in and I'm not happy with it at all. Mine already has creases like a paperback would and I've only used it 2 times so far. The quality of the pages are good and they are thick. The writing is laid out nicely and easy to ready. I loved the references and the extra maps and pages in the back, but the reason this got such low score is because of the quality of the Genuine leather. It doesn't feel like genuine leather at all!
