As this is a gift for my husband, I can't really put a review of the actual use of the product. But, I can discuss the description available for it. Mostly my issue is with the color. It is listed as Cordovan, which is Burgundy. It is not Burgundy. It is more of a tan color, and not what I was thinking. I will know after he recieves the gift if we will be keeping it or exchanging it for another. Secondly, his name is on it, as I requested and paid for, but it's much higher than I thought it should be. Looks a little odd to me, but again, I need to see if he likes it. If he doesn't, I'm sure we'll choose something else.

I was brought up on the KJV Bible, enjoying its elegance & literary beauty. After becoming an adult, I discovered the NIV, which I instantly appreciated for its readability. The NIV has been my main translation for the last 14 years. My main bible has been the Thompson Chain Reference Bible, regular size, black deluxe leather cover (with sewn binding). Once I found out that the ESV was not only endorsed by RC Sproul (who I greatly respect)but also by Dr. James MacDonald, I thought I really should look into the ESV. After doing a lot of research, I was really impressed with the ESV translation, especially when compared with the NIV & NLT comparisons. Once I decided to purchase an ESV, I chose to buy a high quality ESV. One of the things I have enjoyed about the Thompson Chain Deluxe Leather is the feel of the quality leather and the overall quality of the construction...it has held up very well over the last 14 years with much use. So, I looked at all of the ESV leather bibles. I liked the classic reference bible...after years of having different study bibles, I wanted the Word of God "unfiltered". Just me and the Holy Spirit and my ESV...no notes. Bonded leather was ruled out right away...low quality. I then looked at the genuine leather bibles, but after research, realized they had a glue binding...another low quality feature. I wanted good leather and sewn binding. That brought me to the Calfskin leather, burgandy bible. I decided on burgandy because my Thompson was black and I wanted a change. I received the bible a few days ago and I LOVE IT! High quality construction, soft, beautiful leather, two book marks, great color maps in the back, nice looking font and good size (9.5). The size of the bible is perfect...a little smaller than my somewhat big Thompson regular size but a little bigger than the typical compact/personal size. I love the translation...it is literal, readable, and beautiful.I highly recommend this bible!!!

After using the NASB for 15 years I have really enjoyed the clarity and readability of the ESV. This classic ref is ideal for preaching because it is not to big and the print quality is excellent. I would recommend the esv classic ref bible. It is handy and durable and worth the price. God bless you as you dive into His word.

This is a very nice quality Bible. The binding is sewn and the leather cover is nice and soft, although I would have liked it if the inside of the cover was leather lined as well. The paper is nice quality and the print is very readable. It's a nice compact size-great for carrying with you to church, work or wherever. I like the way the ESV reads too. It flows better than the NASB and is just as literal. Good quality for the money!

What matters in a translation of the Bible? Are not all Bible's just as good as another? These are questions that most people have when considering various translations. When a man or woman looks through the shelves of Bibles at a bookstore or browses the pages on ChristianBook.com, then it is only natural to wonder why there are so many translations and which they should purchase. Many have stated that it is best to buy such versions of the Bible that paraphrase or those that claim to be "dynamic translations" so that the Scripture might be more easily understood. However, anyone who considers this, the English Standard Version, would do well to compare it with other translations such as the NIV. One would quickly notice that there is little difference between the two in the simplicity/complicity of the translation. The major difference that should be quickly seen is that the ESV chooses not to impose theological views into the text through their translation as many others do. This translation, is also comparable in beauty and style to the King James Version though it is in language used today rather than the 17th century. Reviewing various translations and versions of the Bible, I can say without a doubt that this is the Bible that a person can joyously use for study, preaching, daily devotion, teaching, and reading aloud. Even in comparison to the NASB (an accurate literal translation) the ESV rises above it in quality. The binding of this particular Bible is remarkable and comes with a lifetime guarantee. The References are very helpful, and its size makes it useful for preaching from the pulpit and reading to your family. I hope that many others may enjoy the excellence to this translation as I have.

I have been blessed by the ESV Bible since 2001, and have been using or looked at each of the leather editions since. The deluxe edition is wonderful but too large to carry with you and the thin line top of the line was great but the new editions are glued binding where the 1st was sewn. Now the classical ref calf skin edition is sewn and a great size to use everywhere.
