Tell us a little about yourself. Howard Books contacted Sharon Siepel about publishing her first book the same day the Navy Reserves called her husband, Kevin, to a year of active duty in Iraq. Ironically, Sharon completed Essential Survival Guide: for the First Year on Your Own while surviving on her own for the first time in over 20 years. Sharons writings have appeared in Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul, CBN.com, The Pen and Sword, and the Cincinnati Enquirer. A full-time mother of four, Sharon serves on the staff of Faith Church, Milford, OH, as the Associate Director of Communications and co-leads Faith Writers, a local writers group. Sharon and her family live in Goshen, OH.
What was your motivation behind this project? Trying to find the perfect book to give to young adults who are graduating or getting married, I became aware of the lack of books that offer practical living advice from a Christian perspective. From this experience came the concept for Essential Survival Guide: for the First Year on Year Own, which offers both practical and spiritual information, like how to find a church, how to balance a checkbook, or how to do laundry.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Combining practical and spiritual advice, Essential Survival Guide gives young adults the knowledge they need for successful independent living. Full of resources and tips for every day life, this is a book every young person will refer to again and again. Topics covered include everything from how to do laundry, how to find a good church, internet safety tips, how to balance a checkbook, first aide, and how to get involved in your community. Each chapter is brief and concise, making information easy to find. The fact that Mom, Dad or other gift-giver can personalize this book with their own suggestions and information makes each book a unique treasure.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Every copy of the Essential Survival Guide has the potential to be unique because of the space provided for the reader, their parents, family, or friends, to personalize their book. Along with writing down advice on which car to buy or which appliance not to purchase, important information, like your family health history, has a place to be recorded.
