Introductory matters cover origin, authorship, and purpose while the main part of the commentary focuses on the text of the letters. Many of the issues these churches faced still confront the church today and Patzia illuminates the text accordingly. This is a goal of the Understanding the Bible series and each author makes the text transparent to the modern reader.

Scripture passage are broken down section-by-section and key terms and phrases are highlighted for the reader. Greek and/or Hebrew is transliterated and given full exposition. Notes at the end of each chapter provide additional textual and technical comments for those readers who want to take further steps for understanding. Scripture and subject indexes are also provided.

All who wish to learn more about Scripture will benefit from this commentary and indeed all volumes in this series. They are reader friendly, non-technical, and appropriately succinct. It is an ideal guide for your study of Scripture.

The New International Biblical Commentary is a conservative treatment of the Scriptures. This volume on Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon begins with an introductory section which discusses the origin, authorship, purpose, and contents of these letters. The commentary is scholarly yet readable and draws out Paul's message to each church. This is a good commentary for students or informed readers.

Arthur Patzia is former senior professor of New Testament at Fuller Northern California and in retirement serves as an adjunct professor. A distinguished scholar, he is the author of several books, including The Making of the New Testament, The Emergence of the Church, and the Pocket Dictionary of Biblical Terms.
