Product Description

The English Standard Version Bible captures as far as possible the precise wording of the original biblical text and the personal style of each Bible writer, while taking into account differences of grammar, syntax, and idiom between current literary English and the original languages. The ESV thus provides an accurate rendering of the original texts that is in readable, high quality English prose and poetry. This Bible has been growing in popularity among students in biblical studies, mainline Christian scholars and clergy, and Evangelical Christians of all denominations.

Along with that growth comes the availability of the books of the Apocrypha included in ESV Bibles, both for denominations that use those books in liturgical readings and for students who need them for historical purposes. More Evangelicals are also beginning to be interested in the Apocrypha, even though they don't consider it God's Word. The English Standard Version Bible with the Apocrypha, for which the Apocrypha has been commissioned by Oxford University Press, employs the same methods and guidelines used by the original translators of the ESV, to produce for the first time an ESV Apocrypha. This will be the only ESV with Apocrypha available anywhere, and it includes all of the books and parts of books in the Protestant Apocrypha, the Catholic Old Testament, and the Old Testament as used in Orthodox Christian churches. It will have a lovely pre-printed case binding, and will include a full-color map section, a table of weights and measures used in the Bible, and many other attractive features.

The English Standard Version Bible with Apocrypha is certain to become the preferred Bible in more conservative divinity schools and seminaries, where the Apocrypha is studied from an academic perspective. And it answers the need of conservative Christians in general for a more literal version of these books.

I snapped this up because I use the ESV in my preaching and teaching and often want to refer to the Apocrypha. This volume is convenient because it includes the Apocrypha at the end of the 66 canonical books of Scripture.

The major issue I encountered was the quality of the cover. The bright red hardback cover looked great when brand new, but does not show wear very well. In less than a year of owning this, the cover split at the spine and the binding was in the process of coming loose. The corners had also become badly worn from normal wear as well.

If this is a volume that you have a need for (it is the only ESV with Apocrypha that I am aware of) I would strongly recommend having it professionally rebound in leather. I did and am thrilled with the results.

This edition could have been so much better. With the history of Oxford I was expecting so much more.

While the print is really dark and bold and readible and fairly large; the paper is way to thin. You can read the words on the next page.

Also, it looks like this edition has a sewn binding; however, when you look closer, you realize that the publishers used overcast stitching on the front and back of the text block while glueing the rest of the binding.

With all of those negatives, you may think that I would not reccomend this ESV, however, if you are looking for an ESV with apocrypha this is the only choice. I also am greatful for Crossway and Oxford giving us this edition.

Taking all things in, along with the great price, you can't go wrong if you decide to get this edition. I just whish that Oxford went with a higher price point and gave us quality materials.

    Be Encouraged:-)

First, let me react to other reviews.

I love having the Apocrypha at the back for one reason: it pushes the New Testament a little closer towards the center so when you're reading, say Jude, you're not at the end of the bound book, but you're many pages in. My comment is not theological (I hope!), but reflects a preferred practicality that is met in this edition.

The pages do seem too flimsy and not good for marking and writing. I would like to make this edition my primary Bible for reading and general portability, but I'm afraid there would be too much bleed-through.

Secondly, in general, I love the ESV as do many, many people. I think this edition is a great addition to my library. But I hope it is soon available on quality paper in a leather cover.

    Great non-PC translation

The ESV is a great non-PC translation that follows the gender of the original language when the gender in the original is gender specific. Strangely, the Apocrapha is placed after the New Testament rather than after the Old Testament.
