Box is too short; otherwise good
February 29, 2016
The box is not deep enough to contain all the cards. If you jostle the box, the top cards will spill out very easily. I had to buy another box to store the cards instead. Other than that, the flashcards are useful and convenient. Compared to the flashcards, the book form additionally provides you with suggestions for activities/games/research, numerical and alphabetical indexes, pronunciation guides and a page of the Greek alphabet. It also tells you how to implement it in a classroom setting. If your library has the book, it's probably more convenient to borrow the book and buy the flashcards.
First, the quality of the product is good and they are easy to use and I agree that learning word roots can be valuable and helpful when coming across words that one doesn't know. The program lists 5-9 words on the back of each root card which is what I use for my 4th graders vocab list for the week. The roots are certainly useful and common roots but most of the time the words chosen to represent that root could be better. Many of the sample words are obscure words that most students aren't likely to come across very often and likely wouldn't remember once they are done with that card. Examples: kenesis card lists kinesiology, kinescope etc. Philia: philoynist, phillumenist philtre, Francophile etc.
Not all cards are this way and there are a lot of more common words also listed but I feel that the makers could have selected much better sample words. I think it would be better as a supplement to a vocab program than a stand alone.
