Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I grew up an Air Force dependent, received a BS degree in Engineering and then an MS in Aeropace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. After serving four years as an Air Force officer in the area of satellite control, my wife Bonnie and I moved back to Austin. In the 1980's I did commercial and legal computer animation. I now teach mathematics at Austin Community College. Bonnie and I have been blessed by two sons, Brian and Phillip, aged 23 and 20.

What was your motivation behind this project?  In the early 1970's I read a small novel by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich." It contained a few pearls of wisdom that I realized would be lost to me unless I wrote them down. I've been writing down quotes ever since. I have found collecting quotations a delightful activity that sensitizes me to all I read and hear, gives comfort when life wobbles, and gives me an opportunity to minister to one's fellows.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  It is my prayer that folks would gain an increased love for quotations, and that quotes would effectively make their way from my 3x5 card catalog into sermons, speeches, conversations, emails, and letters. And perhaps readers would be influenced to use quotations in ministering opportunities. Finally, it is my hope that there would be readers that would choose to start their own collections.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  The book contains 230 quotes from the Bible. The most often quoted individual in the book is Ralph Waldo Emerson (210 quotes), with his precise word selection and profoundness of thought. Another person often quoted is Russian dissident writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn (170 quotes). While most quotes in the book are American, other nationalities are well represented, including a wide varity of proverbs from different nations and time periods.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I have a very strong preference for the short quote (e.g. "Many littles make a much." --Cervantes, "Don Quixote"). There is a good balance between classic and modern. Additionally, the book is sprinkled with a number of humorous quotations (e.g. "Somewhere on this globe every 10 seconds, there is a woman giving birth to a child. She must be found and stopped." --Sam Levenson).
