I was attracted to "The One Year Book of Encouragement: 365 Days of Inspiration and Wisdom for your Spiritual Journey edited by Harold Myra because it is on one of my favorite subjects...Encouragement!

AS Tyndale Publishing puts it: "The One Year Book of Encouragement is a collection of insights from assorted Christian authors, past and present—from Oswald Chambers and Philip Yancey to John Calvin and John Wesley. Draw encouragement every day from the wisdom of the ages with this One Year book—it's bound to be a classic!"

It is set up in a daily devotional style with one inspirational devotion and scripture passage for each day of the calendar year, which makes it very easy to use. When my husband saw it come in he wanted to check it out immediately! You see it is filled with short encouraging thoughts from the lives of SO many of the Christian mentors and heroes that he grew up with!

So he was thrilled to find out this week that I am giving it to him as an gift for our first wedding anniversary that is this Sunday, April 10!

I believe that is a perfect gift of encouragement to give your husband, father, brother, or pastor or even for yourself if enjoy reading encouraging inspiration that crosses denominational lines stays true to the historic Evangelical Christian Faith. These devotions focus on sharing inspirational stories from the personal lives of Christian writers and speakers past and present. It even had a devotion or two from one of my favorite authors, Joni Eareckson Tata.

But don't take my word for it...why not order your own copy today!

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for the purposes of giving an honest review.

The One Year Book of Encouragement: 365 Days of Inspiration and Wisdom for Your Spiritual Journey by Harold Myra is exactly what the title says: encouraging. There's a lot of wisdom here, whether you choose to read it in small daily doses or in larger chunks.

Each one-page message begins with a quotation from a well known inspirational writer. Then Myra discusses the quotation and applies it to our Christian lives. A relevant prayer and Bible text complete each day's devotional. Since the topics do not depend on each other, devotionals can be read in any order.

Myra discovered these quotations during years of reading and now applies them clearly for busy people in the trenches of life. Some of the messages have been amazingly relevant to my life. Of course, God can use anything to inspire us, but He has used this book more often than most.

I could linger for hours on each page. I read about faith, prayer, trust, obedience, success, acceptance, and more from people such as C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Martin Luther, John Wesley, Amy Carmichael, and many others. Many of the messages were challenging, requiring prayer, repentance, and action. I found it very difficult to read the book quickly enough for this review; it made me feel like a person who was ‘hearing but not obeying.' Finally I just skimmed the rest of the book in order to write the review. I'm thankful to be able to re-read it more slowly now that the review is finished.

As can be expected from any compilation such as this, a few theological issues arise. They are not significant enough to detract from the value of this book, though, and I think that most Christians would be blessed by reading it.

Reminder: Do not replace your Bible reading with this or any other devotional book.

Disclosure: Tyndale House provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.

There is something about a good story that makes spiritual truths more comprehensible. When a story touches our heart the impact of its validity is long lasting. Christ, himself, taught in parables. Think about the principle behind the golden rule. What story comes to mind? Perhaps it is that of the Good Samaritan. It is because we relate to stories. Stories inspire us. They encourage us.

I was given The One Year Book of Encouragement through Tyndale House Publishers free in exchange for an honest product review. The book, written by Harold Myra, is broken into 365 days. Each day includes a story from various Christian men and women throughout history, a prayer and a Scripture verse. Written in an easy to read format, the short stories take only a few minutes a day to read. This could be appealing for busy readers. The devotions are full of wisdom and inspiration and share insight from men like John Wesley, Oswald Chambers, Billy Graham, Martin Luther and many more.

I am personally not one to read devotionals. I have always believed that the best source for wisdom and inspiration is the Bible itself. I still stand on that statement. And while this book should never be used to replace the study of God's Word it could be a nice supplement. It is encouraging, being true to its name.

Harold Myra presents a daily devotional based on quotes from some of his favorite authors, each interspersed with his own meditations. Every reading ends with a prayer and Bible passage from the New Living Translation.

Myra seeks to provide encouragement to believers, a goal to be sought by all of us. After all, who doesn't need encouragement to press on in the face of daunting difficulties?

Many of the quoted authors are familiar names, including past saints such as John Wesley, Francis Schaeffer, and Corrie ten Boom, as well as contemporary ones like J.I. Packer and Joni Eareckson Tada.

While the vast majority of those quoted faithfully cling to the revealed truths of Scripture, the inclusion of others is disconcerting in view of their serious deviance from these truths. Henri Nouwen, a late Catholic theologian, offered some valid insights, yet openly disavowed the central truth of Jesus' claim to be "the way, the truth and the life."

In Sabbatical Journey, Nouwen's final book, he wrote, "Today I personally believe that while Jesus came to open the door to God's house, all human beings can walk through that door, whether they know about Jesus or not. Today I see it as my call to help every person claim his or her own way to God." (Quoted by Lighthouse Trails Research).

Unfortunately, several other quoted authors fall into the same snare of contemplative spirituality as Nouwen, including John Ortberg, Gary Thomas and Eugene Peterson. Thus, while overall this book meets the goal of encouragement, readers should be aware of this serious concern and use discernment with these authors.
