Product Description

One way or another, every church will eventually lose its pastor or minister yet few congregations prepare for this dramatic event. The pastor's departure evokes a range of reactions and problems--sorrow and grief, uncertainty, loss of mission and mementum, power struggles--yet no one wants to talk about this elephant in the church boardroom. Weese amd Crabtree give here a guide to developing a succession plan for smoothing pastoral transitions.

This book provides a good analysis of the culture of churches as this influences the pastoral transition process, and identifies some problems that may be associated with pastoral transitions in the different cultures. Some of the suggestions for dealing with transitions seem rather prescriptive, but the book raises needed awareness of the aspects of the process that need to be addressed

This book not only addresses issues that are important in pastoral transitions; it helps one understand the culture of churches. Understanding better "what makes a certain church tick" in terms of church culture is a big help in leading a church. Some of the material is rather complex, and is not necessarily an "easy read," but I found some very helpful gems. It is an insightful book for those in church leadership.
