ACSI Elementary Science: Choices Student Notebook, Grade/Level 6
Vague and leaves a lot to be researched
While the first person to give the book 5 stars might be correct in the pictures being plentiful, it is left out that the content of the book is vague, at best; I am an engineer, specializing in structural applications, so there are many concepts I have not used since upper school / university. That said, this book ASSUMES that the majority of parents in Christian schools in depth understanding of these concepts or have lots of time to spend on the internet / library researching and looking for what is the best response for a child at this level.
Not having looked at the teacher manual, I am sorely disappointed and believe one of two things is happening: 1) teachers leaving it up to "exploratory" learning which does NO GOOD if the child doesn't understand the critical concepts at the end or 2) the teachers themselves don't have the fundamental qualifications to properly teach the subject of science and tie it in with math/higher order math, etc.
This is very distressing and is proof positive of what is being reported in the news, "the United States is NO LONGER an academic or industrial superpower" because we don't enforce teaching and learning critically in math and science.
I look at nature everyday, trees, flowers, insects, etc. to try and glean ideas from God's basic creations on how to make my designs stronger, more durable and least impactful on the environment, and yet I'm embarrased to say that by relying solely on the content of this book, I wasn't able to get my child to fully comprehend fundamental laws of science.
