Product Description

In this comprehensive treatment of all pertinent Scripture passages dealing with election, Dr. Shank demonstrates that Calvin's doctrine of the unconditional election and the reprobation of particular people is without foundation in the Scriptures. He challenges the use of certain "proof passages" and shows that their application in this manner requires circumventing some of the most explicitly categorical affirmations of Scripture.

Publisher's Description

"Through the years, I have read carefully every serious work on the question of election...I found no work that addressed itself to the question in this thorough, objective, competent manner or afforded such satisfactory, obviously Biblical constructions.... I have every confidence that time will prove this to be the definitive work on the difficult question of election."--from the Introduction by Dr. William W. Adams of the Southern Baptist Theological SeminaryIn this comprehensive treatment of all pertinent Scripture passages dealing with election, Dr. Shank demonstrates that Calvin's doctrine of the unconditional election and the reprobation of particular people is without foundation in the Scriptures. He challenges the use of certain "proof passages" and shows that their application in this manner requires circumventing some of the most explicitly categorical affirmations of Scripture.Dr. Shank demonstrates that the election of grace does not rule out the salvation of any man, that God truly wills all men to be saved. The cross is seen as the focal point of election and the event in which time and eternity find their true perspective.

Dr. Shank presents an Arminian view of election. He works through various texts that support election and offers an Arminian viewpoint of these passages. He deals with the writings of Reformers such as John Calvin. My only complaint is that Dr. Shank uses the King James Version and deals with dated Reformed writings. A fresh edition with a better Bible translation and some dealings with the writings of Sproul, MacArthur, White, Frame, and other Reformed theologians.

Shank gives the Bible-believing Christian an alternate way of understanding the concepts of Election and Predestination (other than the Calvinistic understanding). This book is as liberating as his book "Life in the Son."

Very nice work. He has an interesting way of exegeting texts that Reformed folks use to butress their views. The author is a bit too polemical at times, but this is understandable considering the subject. Should be read with the Potter's Freedom by James White (a book on the Reformed view of things).

A solid evangelical treatment of the doctrine of election. Shank presents the Scriptural view of the doctrine of election. He does not begin with the dogmatic doctrine of Calvinism, with its contortions and Scripture twisting, but allows Scripture to speak for itself. One of the absolute best books on election. Highly recommended.

Dr. Shank has followed his first volume "Life in the Son" with another "out of the ballpark hit". I believe there is no finer or more complete declaration of the truth of scripture on the issue of "election" and "predestination". No matter which side of the Calvinian/Arminian argument you find yourself, you owe it to yourself to read this book.
