Product Description

Em>Why Elders? asks straightforward questions about why the early church was organized the way it was and how we can follow Scripture's prescription and model for church leadership today.

Beginning with a forward by Matt Schmucker, Why Elders studies the role of church leaders in the Bible. Next Benjamin L. Merkle lucidly and succinctly analyzes the Scriptural responsibilities and qualifications of elders and deacons and implores churches to vote wisely concerning church leadership.

Scripture calls upon the local church to have specific, essential roles within its differing structures. Why Elders establishes the biblical foundations for eldership so that local churches can provide help and accountability for their pastors. Additionally, local churches will find that understanding and implementing the principles described in Why Elders? help produce a healthier church.

Publisher's Description

Most works on elders are written for the pastor or church leader, but this volume speaks directly to the church member. Benjamin L. Merkle grounds this study about church elders in the Word of God as he clearly and succinctly informs laypeople of the scriptural qualifications and responsibilities of elders and deacons. Then he implores lay men and women to vote wisely concerning church leadership. "Why Elders] "assumes the voice of the curious church member who reads the Bible with an eye focused on the early church's organizational structure and asks, "Why did they do it the way they did]" and "How can we follow Scripture's prescription for leadership]"

Dr. Merkle was a professor of mine in seminary. He is an excellent teacher of God's Word. This book gives a great argument for why a church should adopt a biblical elder-led model of polity.
