There are better books on elders
January 20, 2012
I have read numerous elder books and many by Presbyterians like Van Dam. I do think Van Dam adds to our understanding of the role of elder by surveying the OT, despite the office purely being a NT establishment by our Lord. This is useful. What bothered me about the book was Van Dam's repeated attempt to draw a hard and fast line between the office of "ruling" and "teaching" elder, going so far as to declare them separate offices. While the terms are used for convenience by many if not most Presbyterians I have not found another writer willing to take such a strong stand. I wish he wouldn't have. I do not believe it adds to a healthy, biblical understanding of ecclesiology.
