Book 1 offers 15 narratives on topics as varied as the Great Barrier Reef, the Salem Witch Trials, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Students show their understanding of what they have read by finding and marking answers in the text as well as by writing answers to comprehension questions. They expand and strengthen their vocabulary through exercises that include proverbs, idioms, similes, and homophones. They develop their writing by creating letters, summaries, descriptions, and interviews. Grades 4-7.

However the teacher guide (recommend) is nicely priced.
We used this workbook (one for each kid) grades 5 and 6. It could be used a grade lower than that and certainly up through 8th grade I would say. With the use of the teacher guide you can choose how many additional activities you would like to give to the student based on their ability to work with the material.
Each topic comes with a story, including highlighted vocabulary, encouragement to take notes while reading through the passage, comprehension questions, an activity with the vocabulary words, and paragraph writing activities. Each topics activities vary slightly so it isn't overly redundant.
The topics/stories are interesting and usually we found we already new something about each topic. There is certainly opportunity to explore through each topic, if you want to do more than just workbook work.
*One aspect that pleased me the most is that as we worked through this book I saw my boys writing improve significantly. I did not purchase this as a writing curriculum but it did wonders for helping to improve various types of writing.
We are going to move on to the second book, I recommend starting with book one.
