RAISING THE BAR

Avoiding the traditional sophomore implosion, Edison Glass live up to their namesakes by turning up the watts (Thomas Edison) in ever more interesting and innovative (Philip Glass) rock music explorations on Time Is Fiction. The Long Island based quartet of lifelong friends have chosen to ignore a fashion trend approach and dig more deeply into what made their debut so intriguing: smart progressive chops wed to vital, accessible song structures with evocative lyrics that point to the One Great Mystery that is easier experienced than explained.

In characteristically poetic lyrics, Jean Val Jean makes use of Victor Hugo’s triumphant fictional character from “Les Miserables” to ask “Will good overcome religion? It’s a battle between grace and pride… Will grace overcome what was done?” Here and throughout the disc’s twelve tracks they call us to our best true selves. “We can be lovers,” they assert in “All Our Memories,” suggesting not only of each other, but also of ourselves, of God and life, when we recover that for which we were made.

That provocative spirit flows through words and music, making Time Is Fiction a compelling next step. They still channel Bono on the word “Glorious” in “See Through Me,” and the Police in “The Jig Is Up” and elsewhere, but it’s fun to see a band reaching for the stars on their own merits.
