Personal Book Review: Eden Derailed, a theology of SEX by Pastor Matt Williams

Following my sister's review and beginning with the moment of crisis on page 11, Williams' speaks about Adam's lack of responsibility and passivity. One of the things she and I discussed is how we, all too often, hear of that woman who tempted that man to sin and how his being right there with her simply goes unnoticed.

Oh but how quickly we women turn this understanding around as we are caught in the tangled web of deceit.

Our craving for knowledge and loss of innocence betrays us when we step outside of obedience through Satan's inverted order of communication summarized here:

    • from God to man

    • man to woman

    • they over creation

    turned

    • creation to woman

    • woman to man

    • man hiding truth from God

Yes, "A cunning caboose leading a runaway train" (15).

And there we have it. Cunning manipulation at its best—leading man outside the will of God and on the ride of his life—destruction.

    This broken intimacy separating us from God first, (vertical) each other second (horizontal) (24) can only be restored through relationship with Jesus and community with friends—not sex in itself. {The pattern of the Cross}

I would be remiss if I did not revert back to the analogy of the extension cord as Williams' presented to his dad on page 50:

I walked him over to the electrical isle and to a box of yellow extension cords. Then I plucked a cord from the box and held it up for viewing. 'Here's the deal, Dad,' I said, showing him the two ends of the cord. 'We have the male and the female.' Then I ran my hand along the yellow cord. 'And then we have an insulated environment that protects the voltage and the energy surges which flow between the two fittings.'

He nodded, reached and touched the cord. 'Preach it, son.'

    'I just did.'

He stepped back, hands on hips. 'That's your entire sermon on sex?' 'Yes,' I said, still brandishing the cord.'

'Marriage is an insulated environment that protects the sexual voltage and energy sergeants which flow between the man and the woman. An insulated cord is therefore a conduit for intimacy and oneness.'

You'll have to get the book for the remainder of the analogy; this portion alone is worth the read.

So why is this insulation so important?

Because you don't want to drag God into your sexual sin (103), and you do not want to reproduce the same sexual sin in your children (113).

"God doesn't want you to merely manage your sin. He wants you to conquer it" (119).

Sin is unmanageable. (Neither can you manage guilt and unbelief.)

"Carrying the guilt and shame from past sin is actually an act of unbelief. Because what you're saying is that you are not trusting in Jesus as the one who removed your guilt and shame, but rather you are trusting in yourself" (132).

Turn it over to God in obedience to His Word, through this teaching, and get back on track by simply trusting in Him (Galatians 2:2—3).
