Celebrating the home and living well is the focus of Mary Beth Lagerborg’s Dwelling: Living Fully from the Space You Call Home. Written in simple, easy language, Lagerborg’s style is relaxed and friendly, as if she were talking to a good friend. The book cover specifics of home life, such as how to decorate a room, create one’s own work and rest space, and entertain company with a minimum of stress. Each chapter is filled with anecdotes of how her friends make their homes happy, contented dwellings. Plus, there are questions interspersed in the chapter and at the end of the book to get the reader thinking about how to make his or her own home a place of rest and spiritual renewal.

Lagerborg talks about simple things that can make a big difference in one’s quality of life, such as a special candle for the dinner table, watching the trees from an office window, or adding a bouquet of wildflowers to a guest room. Children’s needs are addressed with pointers on setting up play areas and keeping them occupied when Mom is working at home. Having authored the book, Once-a-Month Cooking, Largerborg gives helpful tips on how to keep guests satisfied with style and grace, without the hassle. The suggestions to set up a table, re-decorate a room, or serve a buffet-style meal sound like excerpts from a home and garden magazine. She even gives a recipe for whole-wheat bread.

An enjoyable aspect of this book is the quotations from other famous authors and from the Bible. However, to this reviewer, the given solutions to problems that might arise when several people are living together seem overly simplistic. The author’s outlook is idealistic and almost Pollyana-ish,” appearing to strive to be Martha Stewart with a spiritual twist. If the reader accepts this premise, this is a light but fairly decent book to be added to the Christian bookshelf. – Anita Tiemery, Christian Book Previews.com
