I don't think it was a coincidence that I had a conversation with a reader friend on reviewing not-so-favorite books while reading ''Duchess''. There is never intention of coming across as rude or inconsiderate when reviewing books I didn't like. However, just like my reader friend said so well : ''sometimes, a book is only as good as the reader.'' The author might be seen by others as a very gifted writer but for one reader, one or a couple of stories written by this author might prove to be hard to ''connect'' with.

This was exactly the case for me with ''Duchess''.

I can understand why many readers liked the book. Susan May Warren is a name well-known in Christian Fiction and her pen is quite fine. With many bestsellers and several fans of her work, she's influenced a good number of writers. If you haven't read one of her books, at some point, you just have to see what all the noise is about. I've discovered a writer with the ability to craft great ideas and backgrounds for her stories. I've read and enjoyed ''My Foolish Heart'' and thought ''Baroness'' - the 1st book in the Daughters of Fortune series - a nice read. But ''Duchess''? The cover is elegant; the setting is elegant, but I had SUCH a difficult time getting into the story. Here are some reasons why.

In the first place, the point of view. First person participant. We only get to ''see'' the story through Rosie's point of view. I so wish this had been different. I really, really couldn't understand Rosie, her behavior was too contradictory. Providing a second pair of 'lenses' to assess the story can enrich it immensely, granting a reader the opportunity to understand more about characters and situations. It seemed to me like there was a lot to understand in between the lines with Rosie. Rolfe's perspective might have helped in clarifying some things and enjoying the story more. Secondly, Duchess is VERY slow many times, because of the long descriptions. And the slowness of the story had me noticing the clichés in the story. (Repeated mentions and descriptions of riches.) Also, it's hard to follow at times because some elements are not clear. I didn't read the first book in the series so I was left confused about several details of Rosie's past. I get that a writer should withhold some things to pique a reader's curiosity about the other books in the series, however, Warren could have given more details of the first book to help me understand and enjoy the last one, in my opinion. And lastly, Rosie's and Rolfe's ''connection'' is a bit lacking.

Nonetheless, this is only one reader's view and come to think of it, stories that weren't easy to connect with help me, in a sense, as a reader. They contribute in helping me realize and articulate clearly what it is I look for in a story. To anyone considering ''Duchess'', several glowing reviews have been written about it so you never know..

What a book to encourage, uplift and help you move forward in trusting God.

You learn so much about Hollywood and how it has changed now. Roxy or Rosie looked for applause to keep her mind off choices she had made.

Rolfe uses a film production to help Jews escape being killed. The time the Nazis persecuted them is so real as you read.

The romance between Roxy or Rosie and Rolfe takes time. Yet God has a plan. When they detour from his plan, he brings them together again and again.

The ending is a time of rejoicing as Rosie reconnects with her daughter from her first marriage. Her brother returns from war where he was thought dad and surprises her Mom.

Rosie and Rolfe have a daughter birthed during war. Rolfe's daughter from his first marriage is made part of their family. God's plan is unfolded to completion.

Applause was no what Rosie needed but rather fulfillment through God's love.

The hardest part about this book is having it ending, and knowing there isn't another one coming.

Rosie is now a star, she pays a high price for being one. We get a close up look at the film industry, just when talking pictures are coming. By the end of the book they are tying color.

Rosie is now Roxy, and she is in a marriage of convenience, with Dashielle Parks. You will feel, it seems to be more to his advantage than hers. There is no love in this marriage, and they both agreed. How sad.

There are some very sad happenings in this story, but what a kind heart Rosie has. Don't know if I could have opened my home and heart the way she did. Love how she followed the Lord.

We travel with Rosie to Europe to make a movie produced by the man, her Mom Jinx wanted her to originally marry. The World is getting dark again, as Hitler is coming to power. Will the movie help serve a purpose, bring fame to Rosie, or could it play a larger roll in helping people, who through no fault of their own, are fearing for their lives.

Don't miss this conclusion to the Daughter's of Fortune Series, and if you haven't read the first two, do yourself a favor, and devour them!

    Emotional Conclusion to this Series

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Daughters of Fortune series by Susan May Warren and was excited to see how all of the loose ends wrapped up (hopefully!) in the conclusion, Duchess. As I've come to expect from Warren, this book was an emotional roller coaster! I found myself feeling such intense emotions right alongside Roxy—sorrow, joy, despair, love.

I don't want to give too many "secrets" away, but let me just say that I was pleased to see how several of the story lines from earlier in the series concluded. It was fun to meet up with old characters and to reconnect with Roxy. I admit I was a little frustrated with Roxy at the beginning. She just got under my skin. But then she started to open up a little and I could glimpse the person she was becoming and grew to like her more and more!

The one thing I was a little disappointed with was how large chunks of time were skipped over. It seemed that another book could have been added to the series to allow for a tighter story and to give some of the details that we skipped over. It seemed like those could have been some of the best, juiciest parts of the story!

Overall, though, I loved Duchess. I would definitely recommend the entire series ... and would encourage you to read them in order. Enjoy getting to know these incredible women and seeing how God transforms their lives! [4 stars]

I received a free copy of this book from Summerside Press & Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Susan May Warren in her new book "Duchess" Book Three in the Daughters Of Fortune series published by Summerside Press takes us into the life of Rosie Worth.

From the back cover: The golden age of Hollywood is in the business of creating stars. Rosie Worth, now starlet Roxy Price, has found everything she's wanted in the glamour of the silver screen. With adoring fans and a studio-mogul husband, she's finally silenced the voices--and grief--of the past. Her future shines bright...until the fated Black Friday when it all comes crashing down.

When Roxy loses everything, she finds herself disgraced and penniless. Her only hope is to join forces with Belgian duke Rolfe Van Horne, a longtime film investor. But Rolfe is not who he seems, and he has other plans for Roxy and her movies--plans to support a growing unrest in Europe, plans that could break her heart and endanger her life.

When her country needs her, will she have the courage to surrender her glittering world and her one true love?

I like history and "Duchess" is a captivating book rich with historic detail, both American and European history. This time the focus primarily on Rosie and all the hardships and sorrows that she goes through. Rosie is now a Hollywood star with a name change to Roxy. She has abandoned her inheritance and is trying to make her dreams come true on her own and she has the battle scars that got her where she is. However, events conspire against her and her fame and dreams come to an end. Now Rosie has to rebuild her life and this time she needs to let God give her direction. "Duchess" is an emotional ride that will wring you out and then fill you with renewal. God tells us that all things work together for the good and that, in His time, He makes all things beautiful. Want to really know how He does it? Susan May Warren shows us the how in this thrilling finale. "Duchess" is a wonderful, sweet story with power and depth that will keep you flipping pages. I recommend this book highly and, while I am sorry to see this series end, I look forward to the next series from this very talented author.
