For each section, students are expected to go through the material, after which the parents checks the work and reviews; the parent listens to the audio series and reviews the appropriate video with the student; finally, the parent and student go out and practice the lessons from the text. Checklists provide easy tracking of which skills have been introduced and mastered; lessons include rules and concepts students need to learn, often with diagrams, coaching tips, driving activities, and alternative explanations to help them truly understand the concepts. Tests and room to record time spent driving is also included. This course requires a minimum of 50 in-vehicle training hours, expecting that students will be able to complete the given checklists 10 times without a reminder. You will need a state Handbook or Drivers Manual, and check to see if you need a permit, beginning or training license.
Please see our More Info link for states that either do not accept this program, or require additional courses or information.

Melanie Gilman2 Stars Out Of 5July 8, 2010Melanie GilmanWe have used this course for 3 of our children, but will not be using it for our last. As other reviewers have said, the company will not sell the consumables to families who have purchased the materials for their other children. A few years ago, when it was only $200 or so, we could justify purchasing it again, but now it is just far too high to buy what we already have. I have spoken to 2 employees of the company, and they both gave the same answer to our request. Further more, this is not an easy program to implement. The materials are very disjointed and difficult to coordinate together. While we feel that it did a good job of teaching us how to teach our kids, and that we have 3 good drivers, it was a program we had to adapt, as it is very intensive and requires a child to execute each skill perfectly "ten times" before moving on to the next skill, and because the repetition of the numerous "commentaries", verbal cues used while driving intended to ingrain good habits, will drive you and your kids to gouging each others eyes out after the first week. We used them, but much more reasonably. Drivers Ed in a Box will get no more of our money. They don't seem to understand good customer service.
Kristen Johnson1 Stars Out Of 5June 22, 2010Kristen JohnsonI was under the impression you could invest in this program and then purchase additional workbooks for each child taking it. After contacting the company this am, I found out they want you to purchase the program for every one of your kids! You have to pay all over again. This certainly punishes larger families. It's also slightly confusing to figure out how it all works together. Not user friendly on either account!
Nanette Velazquez5 Stars Out Of 5May 23, 2010Nanette VelazquezI have used this program with four of my kids, one after another, and it is easy and effective right from the beginning. In fact, I became a better driver after teaching with Drivers Ed in a Box. If you don't have the time to do teach this program, then don't use it, because it does take time and effort. I didn't use this program to teach my stubborn child, and she totalled my car last summer. Wow, I regret not using Driver Ed in a Box with her!
desiree Volle1 Stars Out Of 5March 9, 2010desiree VolleI enjoyed the program. But getting the certificate in the end was almost like pulling teeth with faxing and refaxing and calling and checking to make sure the certificate was mailed. I would not recommend this product for this reason...customer service was not good.
Danny Smith4 Stars Out Of 5July 28, 2009Danny SmithI used this program for my daughter's home school education. This is a very comprehensive drivers education program. There is a lot of material to cover and plenty of work for both the parent and the student. Overall, I was very impressed with the outcome, my daughter is confident behind the wheel and I even learned a few things myself. While other products we looked at might have been a little more user friendly, I ultimately decided on this program because of their money back guarantee as well as their comprehensive approach to drivers ed. The staff was also very helpful in answering any questions we had.
