Ugh. I think most of my life I have avoided it like the plague. I haven't taken chances or invested in relationships because I didn't want to end up heartbroken. But despite my best efforts to stay out of the fray...it comes.
The truth is that all of us have experienced rejection. Rejection of a spouse, a child, a friend, an employer or a dream. Downside Up contains real help to navigate those rejections and turn them into blessings. I read a good portion out loud to my husband on a trip. My husband kept looking at me, "Wow! That's right! I can see that."
We are in the ministry. For the past several years we have been healing from a season of heartache and rejection. This book was a God send. Sometimes we have let the opinions and actions of others dictate or color what we feel God has called us to. There were several instances that Tracey Mitchell hit the nail on the head. It was like she had been privy to our innermost thoughts and fears.
The book didn't just cast a light on our woes. Ms. Mitchell gave us a clear "plain of action." I think that God placed this tool in our hands for such a time as this. This book is for everyone. There is, however, great advice specifically for young women. I have a few young women in my life who need to read this. There are so many great truths!
I am always a bit leery of advice that leans more towards humanism. I don't believe that we can all achieve great things for God based on own merit. The author offers a healthy balance between building self-confidence and learning to trust God to work His will. I am giving this book a thumbs up!

downside up shows us that there is a positive effect of getting rejected. the problem is it's hard for us to see it because our heart is so hurt. God has a plan for our life. and if there is someone i would love to plan my life, it's certainly Him. one thing that i realized throughout reading this book was there was a REASON for the rejection that you receive. it's because that person or thing wasn't right for your life at this point in time.
the end of every chapter in this book offers a list of principles gleaned from the chapter, a verse from the Bible, a quote and a plan of action that offers something for the reader to do to help them grow or heal from rejection. i really liked this way of ending each chapter.
one section of this book that i especially found helpful was on negative self-talk. that is something i've always had a problem with. YOU are the person you spend the most time with. as she said "a million compliments cannot cure negative self-talk". the way we talk to our self can create a paralyzing, irrational fear of rejection within us.
this book was provided to me free of charge by booksneeze.com in return for my honest review. the opinions i have expressed are my own.
Shan5 Stars Out Of 5Practical application for dealing with rejection.June 12, 2013ShanQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5After reading Downside Up by Tracey Mitchell, I will never be able to think of rejection in the same way again. Prior to reading this book, I did not consider that there could be a positive aspect to rejection. Typically when people try to figure out how to handle rejection they focus on how to prevent it. Tracey Mitchell provides a much healthier and dare I say Biblical view of rejection. Just as fear can be a productive warning, rejection can have the same benefit. If we begin to view it as a warning signal instead of a judgment, it will divert an attack on our self-esteem. Simply put, rejection is a matter of perception. It is yet another tool that Satan uses to keep us from experiencing God's best for our lives. Another lie he sells us to prevent us from following God's purpose. The Bible does not tell us that if we follow Him, we will not face opposition. In fact, it tells us the very opposite. If we view rejection through the lens of scriptural context, it lessens rejection's power and frees us to pursue our God given dreams. It is not rejection that causes our insecurities, rather our fear of rejection that does. The question is will you face your fear? I recommend Downside Up, by Tracey Mitchell if you dare face your fear of rejection.
