The Douay-Rheims Version of the Holy Bible, translated between the years 1582 and 1610 and revised by Bishop Richard Challoner from 1749-1752, is one of the most accurate English translation of the Bible available today. It was the only Catholic translation of Scripture commonly in use for over 200 years. Translated with profound respect for every word, the beautiful style of the Douay-Rheims Bible gives you a deeper understanding of the Word of God.

TAN Books in association with Saint Benedict Press
DougBGender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Great Quality- no complaintsOctober 3, 2013DougBGender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This item was just as expected. Same clear printing, format, etc. of the imitation leather Saint Benedict/Tan Douay-Rheims Bible but with a real leather binding instead. As with the other example, this is a standard, (8.5 or 9 pt?) text, not tiny and not giant print. While I prefer larger text, the fact that these Douay Bibles are verse settings, like most KJVs, allows me to read it comfortably.
Leather is not $200 floppy premium goatskin at this price! However, it is a very nice quality nonetheless, not at all hard or crunchy like many bonded and "genuine" leather bindings I have seen over the years. I predict it will break in well. Like most Catholic editions, no concordance. But it should be noted that the Douay from Saint Benedict does have limited cross references, footnotes and a simple "Bible timeline" feature in the back, along with a few favorite prayers. I'd rather have a good concordance but these little extras should be noted.
If you are interested in the Douay translation and either don't like the high-quality synthetic bindings or prefer real leather for a Bible that lives in your car and gets some abuse, this is an excellent choice.

We Catholics have the same kind of good quality, affordable, portable bible as the Protestants. In the Douay-Rheims translation with Christ's words in red letters. (I never understood the obsession with Red Letter bibles but now I see that this wee feature is actually very useful in making Christ's words easy to locate, etc.)
Affordable + Good quality are the key words here. I know that Baronius Press prints a fantastic DR bible of excellent quality but they are very pricey. Also, I find them less easy to haul around, for some reason. (The small 6X4 Baronius Press bible and the smaller Baronius Press NT + Psalms both have absolutely *microscopic* print so I find myself having to use the larger version. Which is very heavy, etc.) And the font is that old 1800's printing press style, with the stray lines etc that actually make it difficult for me to read.
The Baronius Press Douay-Rheims bibles make FINE family bibles but this DR bible from St. Benedict's press wins hands down as a portable devotional bible.
For less then 40 bucks you get a steal of a bible! The leather covers are much softer then so many of those other bibles made from "bonded leather." They feel stiff, rough, plastic, but the covers on this bible feel like well-worn leather. Yet the covers are still firm enough, they don't flop wide open when held in the hand.
For the most part this bible lays flat while being read. It does "pop up" if you are more towards the very beginning or very end. (I solve this using a clothes pin...)
I was shocked when this inexpensive bible arrived and I discovered that not only was the leather gorgeous, but the pages were fantastic! (I was expecting cheap paper for the price...)
The pages are just thick enough to feel substantial, for "bible paper." And there is very minimal bleed-through. I loathe bleed-through so this is a big deal for me!
Font size is just right. I have bad eyes so small print is a nightmare. If you wear glasses you'll still be able to easily read this font.
The typing is clean and clear. The pages are uncluttered, with a two-column layout. There are minimal notes and minimal "letters" and astrix mixed in with the text (for indicating footnotes). This makes life easier for my dyslexic brain.
Christ's Words in Red:
Awesome extra feature, absolutely RARE to find in a Catholic bible
Gorgeous prints in the back, maps, the usual "births, marriages and deaths" sections, all on glossy thick "magazine" paper, prayers, "list of Popes", an explanation of St. Benedict and his medal...
This is not a hard-core "study bible" jam packed with tons of notes. So as a result this bible is large enough to be easily read, but compact enough that you can haul it around without dislocating your shoulder from the weight...
Dimensions of this Bible: (Measuring the cover)
Nearly 8.5" tall
5 3/4" wide
Almost 1.5" thick
(I purchased some "Verse Finder Bible Tabs, Horizontal, Catholic" from ChristianBook and placed them into my Douay-Rheims bible so that I could easily find verses that today are referred to by modern terms. A big help!) For example:
Modern 1st and 2nd Samuel = DR 1st and 2nd Kings
Modern 1st and 2nd Kings = DR 3rd and 4th Kings
Modern 1st + 2nd Chronicles = DR 1st + 2nd Paralipomenon
Etc, etc, just google search for which books are which. :-)
