Product Description

What gives a person value? What provides purpose for a life? Who Am I? And What Am I Doing Here? helps children understand what it means to be made in the image of God.

Designed around a notebooking concept, instructions provide opportunities for students to think and ponder with the questions given, as well as consider their own thoughts. Each lesson features an introduction to the main topic, learning objectives, a short story, thought-provoking questions, important vocabulary words, two Bible memory verses, interesting interdisciplinary topics, godly character traits that students should demonstrate as a response, prayer, and a worldview portion that provides a child's perspective on being a Muslim, Mormon, New Age spiritualist, Hindu, Buddhist, Communist, and other non-Christian beliefs.

Customize the schedule to your students' level; most chapters can be covered in two weeks, and this study may be used independently or with a parent. Ages 6-14, NIV, NLT, and NCV Scripture verses are used. 264 pages, hardcover.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am a father of six children, all of whom have been taught at home. Though I currently work as a freelance writer and editor, and I have more than a dozen years' experience in Christian publishing at the management level.

What was your motivation behind this project?  The project was born out of a crying need among homeschooling families for a quality curriculum to help them instruct elementary-level and junior high children in a biblical worldview as well as the beliefs of the Christian faith. Our publisher, Apologia, has partnered with Summit Ministries to produce this series of beautiful, full-color textbooks. Who Am I? (And What Am I Doing Here?) is the second book in the series.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  John and I hope that these books will change the way children and their families look at the world each day. In a world of competing ideas, these books are designed to help children learn to discern the truth by using GodÂ’s Word as a lens through which to view the world around them -- to see everything the way God sees it. We pray that these books will bring the world, its Creator, and His amazing love into clearer focus for parents and their children, helping them to build a biblical self-image and an unshakable faith to last a lifetime.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I have been tremendously blessed by the project, which has required me to approach God anew with a childlike faith. It's not easy to describe His wonders and beauty and mysteries using only a fifth-grade vocabulary, but we did our best. Now it's in the hands of the Holy Spirit to use as He sees fit.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I hesitate to mention the names of friends and colleagues for fear of omitting someone. However, among contemporary authors, I am particularly fond of the works of Kathleen Norris, Mark Buchanan, and Jan Karon. Jack Hayford has been a huge influence on my life.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Our publisher, Apologia, is well known for its customer support, and this product will prove no exception. Parents and teachers who will be using these books as curriculum will have free access to extensive teaching helps posted on the Apologia website.
