jblovez2read5 Stars Out Of 5Man's Best FriendJuly 6, 2011jblovez2readQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"A dog is a man's best friend." Susy Flory, a dog lover herself, has written a wonderful book, Dog Tales, featuring stories of dogs who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in taking care of their people and other animals. The stories are endearing and a wonderful reminder of how our Creator made them to be a human's companion. They illustrate the truth of the quote mentioned above. Here are a few of the dogs featured in her book:
You will discover the courage of Roselle, a seeing-eye dog who happens to be afraid of thunder storms, yet courageously led her blind owner out of Tower One of the World Trade Center on 9/11.
Black Pearl is a dog with high energy and intelligence. She came to be one of the rescue dogs in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti.
I think my favorite story is about Brutis, a 125-pound golden retriever, who saved his owner's grandchildren from a coral snake.
There is something special about the bond between a dog and its owner. They love unconditionally and will do just about anything for the one that cares for and loves them. Whether you are a dog lover or not, these stories will warm your heart and will give you more of an appreciation for these four legged animals.
Natalie B5 Stars Out Of 5Canine True Grit Stories Told With a Gentle PawJune 28, 2011Natalie BQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Can I just say wow_as in BOW-WOW! Susy Flory's book "Dog Tales: Inspirational Stories of Humor, Adventure, and Devotion" begins and ends with her own touching pet dog anecdotes which, in and of themselves, are wag-worthy. But the pages sandwiched between contain stories of tremendous canine true grit told in a simple, journalistic style - her voice breathes fresh air into our entertainment culture of hyped and contrived reality TV shows where a mere hangnail may constitute calamity. Flory provides a good deal of background and side note information that give the narratives context and application, but keep that box of tissues nearby! Surprising doggie feats remind us of how Faith inspires, the value of pressing on after tragedy or encouraging others amidst danger, and the sacrifice involved when choosing to hold on and wait. We also see that when it comes to remarkable dogs and humans, protection is a two-way street.
Heart wrenching and heartwarming, the anthology contains my new all-time favorite title, "Running with Roselle" and you will have to read the story to find out why. Phrases such as "back from the dead", "fresh start", "belief in second chances", and "new every morning" kept popping up in my mind as I inhaled each compelling account, so let me suffice it to say that this collection will uplift anyone looking for a new leash on life. As a word trivia geek I've often considered it no small coincidence that God spelled backwards is dog, and that if this wondrous animal can mirror divine traits of faithfulness and courage at a moment of dire peril, or exude patience and cheer in everyday life, then perhaps we can do so too. Earnestly presented, Flory's book reveals doggedness as a vital component of that most heavenly attribute known to mutt or man - unconditional Love.
