Originally delivered as sermons by pastor Mark Dever at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington DC, these three studies are now available in one hardcover volume. Dever guides readers to take a step back and look at the Bible from a broader perspective. As we notice new features of an object when viewed from a distance, so too the major themes of Scripture become more apparent when we take in the Bible as a whole. Part of the IXMarks series, this book considers the central messages of the Bible as seen in the promises of God.
Dever examines the general narrative of God's Word to answer the question, "What does God wants of us anyway?" Readers looking for a panoramic view of Scripture will be reminded of the faithful, persistent love of God and find themselves drawn into a broader, but deeper, understanding of the maker and keeper of promises.
Introduces the reader to a panoramic view of Scripture. Centering on the main burdens of the Bible, the reader's gaze is directed to the one who makes promises and keeps them. Part of the IXMarks series.
Mark Dever (PhD, Cambridge University) is senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC, and pastor of 9Marks Ministries. Dever has authored over a dozen books and speaks at conferences nationwide.
Mark Dever has provided an excellent remedy for this problem. Originally a series of sermons preached at Capitol Hill Baptist Church, What Does God Want of Us Anyway? is a concise but thorough presentation of the central themes of Scripture. The book's subtitle says that this is a quick overview, but Dever has been careful to provide explanations of potentially confusing concepts such as sin, covenant, and atonement. He offers up a recurring riddle: How can God forgive 'wickedness, rebellion and sin' and yet 'not leave the guilty unpunished'? Thankfully, he also provides the glorious answer.
Each of the book's three sections concludes with several questions for further thought which are wonderfully helpful. I echo the resolve of Aaron Menikoff in his endorsement: this is a book I will give away again and again. Pam Glass, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

It should more accurately be labeled, "What is the Bible all about?" That is not to say that this small volume is without merit. Given its size (@125 pages) and easily-readable style, it has the potential to be a wonderful evangelistic tool or a helpful resource to place in the hands of a new believer. The author does a commendable job of surveying the entirety of Scripture by providing an "aerial view" that places both testaments, as well as the individual books of each into perspective. Dever demonstrates the consistent unveiling of God's purpose and promise throughout the biblical narrative in such a way that the reader is better able to relate the individual parts to the whole. This would be a very good book to use in a new members class or in a small group study among those getting into God's Word for the first time. As with all of the books in the small 9Marks series, this one is biblically sound and well worth the investment.
Jonathan5 Stars Out Of 5April 8, 2010JonathanGod has made many promises and they are found in Scripture. Mark Dever, in his book "What Does God Want Of Us Anyway?", outlines God's promises in Scripture. He looks to the Old Testament as the place where God makes His promises. He looks to the New Testament as the place where God keeps His promises. Dever does an excellent job and looking at God's promises. He shows how these promises are full of hope, not only because the promises are made, but more importantly because God keeps all of the promises that He makes. This short book does an excellent job of writing a great overview of the whole Bible. The message of the Bible is seen very clearly through the Promises of God. Dever uses these promises to help outline the message of the whole Bible. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get an overview of the Bible.
