In this colorfully illustrated sequel to Most of All, Jesus Loves You!, children ages 3-7 learn to spot not just the potential friends that are around them but to recognize and desire Jesus' friendship most of all.
Noël Piper (BA, Wheaton College) and her husband, John, ministered at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota for over 30 years. She is the author of Treasuring God in Our Traditions and Faithful Women and Their Extraordinary God.
Growing up, Gail Schoonmaker loved to draw pictures depicting the songs and stories she heard in church. She earned a B.A. in art from Wheaton College and makes her home in Chicagos Hyde Park neighborhood with her husband, Keith, and their four children.
The most important lesson to learn, however, is that there is no greater friend in any circumstance than the Lord Jesus. If we try to be like Him, not only will be have more friends, but we will also be a better friend to others.
Each double set of pages teaches young readers the value of friendship. This is shown in bright colorful drawings by Gail Schoonmaker of friends loving each other, comforting each other, playing together, studying together, and sharing with one another. Each time a lesson about friendship is taught and is displayed with a drawing, it is supported by a passage from the Bible. For instance, one lesson is that a friend will forgive you when you do something wrong, and the passage cited is Ephesians 1:7, "In him, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace."
The book concludes with the words and music of John Newton's hymn "One There Is, Above All Names." This is an attractive little book that is filled with practical advice and biblical wisdom. Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
Kristina4 Stars Out Of 5August 4, 2009KristinaIf you know a child who isn't familiar with Jesus, Do You Want a Friend? by Noel Piper (wife of author and preacher John Piper), is a nice way of making Christianity seem appealing to young children. The picture book opens with a little boy sitting on a porch. He's just moved and he doesn't know anyone in the neighborhood. He yells out: "Friends! Friends!," hoping someone will apply for the position. Soon he has friends of all ages and descriptions. "Do you want a friend, too?" the author asks. "Do you want a friend who loves you? Do you want a friend who comforts you when you are sad or sick?" Who helps you be strong, who helps you know God, who makes you happy, who prays for you, who forgives you, who helps you do good? "Maybe you have a lot of friends. But can any of them do ALL these things ALL the time? No. Jesus is the only friend who is everything we need. There is no friend like Jesus."The author then explains that Jesus died for our sins and that he is "the best friend of all."What I Like: Every page describing Jesus includes a quote and reference from the Bible to back up the claim. Throughout, colorful illustrations by Gail Schoonmaker show people of many ethnicities and abilities. On the last page of the book, the sheet music to "One There is, Above All Others" (vocal line only) is printed. What I Dislike: The author's offers next to no explanation about why Jesus died on the cross and what that means for each of us. Do You Want a Friend? does a good job of making the idea of knowing Jesus appealing, but you will need another book to help explain why we need Jesus.Overall Rating: Good.
