Practicing surgeon Harry Kraus puts forth a theology of loveusing Paul's metaphor for the church as "the body of Christ."
HARRY KRAUS is a practicing general surgeon currently serving with Africa Inland Mission as a missionary surgeon at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya. Known for his fast-paced fiction characterized by medical realism, Kraus is the author of eight novels and two works of nonfiction, including Crossway's Breathing Grace. He and his wife have three sons.
As a missionary, Dr. Kraus has uncovered a terrible disease in the church, and in The Cure, he makes his bold case to fight and eradicate the malady. Dr Kraus explains that the main problem plaguing the church is the lack of emphasis and practice of agape love. As Jesus said, By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:35). The focus of the body of Christ must return to being living examples and conveyors of Gods love, both to other believers and the non-Christian world.
Dr. Kraus uses many stories from his medical experiences to relate how the physical body operates in unity to maintain proper health. He breaks his book into three sections and uses each one to emphasize the areas of weakness and sickness in the church.
In the first section, he clearly lays out the mandate and mission Jesus gave: love one another. This concept seems so basic that many simply seem to pay no attention to it. Dr. Kraus stresses that a thorough grasp and implementation of this mission must be the foundation of all the churchs activities.
Section Two covers basic health maintenance of the body of Christ, including awareness of an anorexic church or the invasion of spiritual insomnia. And as any caring doctor would do, Dr. Kraus concludes with a prescription for the disease.
Dr. Krauss passion for The Cure flows from every page, and he writes from love and not anger. Taking this doctors advice can lead to spiritual recovery. -- Jeff Friend, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
"Harry Kraus understands love biblical, selfless, servant love the way few do. Get lost in the lines of The Cure and remember once more the reason youre here to love and love well." Karen Kingsbury, author of Ever After and Between Sundays
This metaphor, the body of Christ, is one of the chief ways that the Bible teaches us to think about the church, and practicing surgeon Harry Kraus brings it to life in The Cure. He explains how an understanding of physiology the wonderful way God has put together the physical body in function and form can show us how love can be realized in the life of the believer and the church.
When asked what can be done to inherit eternal life, Jesus' answer can be summed up in a single word: love. Love stands at the heart of the gospel, the core of Gods motivation and plan to rescue his bride. Through this careful dissection of Pauls metaphor, readers will come to an understanding about Christ's command (love!) and how to fulfill it.
