Toni Rodden has escaped a life of prostitution and vows she'll never let a man control her again. After months on the wagon train, she's finally earned her place, albeit grudgingly from some, and has found a surrogate family in Fannie Caldwell and her two siblings. For the first time she can taste freedom and the possibilities of a new life. But as Fannie prepares to marry wagon master Blake Tanner, Toni realizes how alone she is and questions whether she'll ever find acceptance, or true love.
Despite Toni's conviction that no man will be able to see beyond her marred past, Sam Two-Feathers, the half-Indian wagon scout and acting preacher for the train, seems to know of a love that forgives sins and values much more than outward appearances. Will Sam have the confidence to declare his love? Will Toni be able to trust in a love that can forgive even the darkest past?
Tracey Bateman is the award-winning author of many books, including Kansas Home.
“Tracey Bateman is one of the most talented new storytellers in Christian fiction.”
“The second book in the Westward Hearts series is a must-read for those who treasure the untold stories of pioneer women. Historical details help readers experience early American Christianity and all its struggles and triumphs.”
Anne Hunt4 Stars Out Of 5October 13, 2008Anne HuntI enjoyed both books 1& 2. They outline the role of women in settling the west and the hardships they suffered. God's redeeming grace is very evident and if you look closely you can see yourself at various times of your life. A good read.
Gloria Glider5 Stars Out Of 5August 1, 2008Gloria GliderThis is the second book in the series about the wagon trains going west. It also has a good lesson that God forgives you no matterwhat your past was like and will provide theanswers to your prayers if it is within His will.

Marlene Miller5 Stars Out Of 5March 14, 2008Marlene MillerThis one is twice as good as the last one! There's more action, and it shows us how to look on the inside, not the out.
MJ5 Stars Out Of 5February 25, 2008MJDistant Heart is the sequel to Defiant Heart Tracey Bateman has gotten together a good series that parallels to other great authors such as Tamera Alexander and even touches on the artistic ability of Francine Rivers's book Redeeming Love. Here, we take on the continued adventure from Defiant Heart but from the perspective of the ex-prostitute Toni and her journey to the Oregon territory. If the trip is not difficult enough without other events thrown in here and there... Try Indian Attacks and kidnappings, adultery and murder, and a new strange girl Ginger into their midst. Will the Cheyenne get there way and get Toni for their keeping? Who is Ginger and what does she want? Will the children and sister from the other wagon train be rescued? Will Amanda Kane ever heal? God is incredible and though he sometimes works slowly, if you look back and see what he is capable of you will be shocked an amazed...These books are fast reads, at least for me, but they are strongly recommended good reads.
