Christians are disciples of Christ. Since our entire identity is defined by Christ, we do well to think carefully about what it means to be a disciple. Bill Clem, a pastor at Mars Hill Church in Seattle, looks closely at the characteristics of discipleship.
Originally written as a text for the Resurgence Training Program (Re:Train), Disciple grounds our identity as disciples in the storyline of the Bible. Careful not to be overly prescriptive, Clem instead uses Scripture and real-life stories to illustrate the essential elements of Christian discipleship. He does so by looking at characteristics and distortions of image, worship, community, and mission. He finishes with a practical chapter on weekly planning and a chapter on the multiplication of disciples. Each chapter ends with an assignment in which Clem encourages readers to journal through Scripture passages built around a particular theme. Both veteran and new followers of Jesus will benefit from this comprehensive look at what it means to be a disciple.
"Challenges us all to dig deeper so that we might learn what it means to be a true follower of Jesus and to help others to do the same." -Mike Love, Founder and Director, Extreme Dream Ministries
"A beautiful portrait of what a disciple is and what discipleship looks like. A must read for anyone serious about making gospel-centered disciples." -Carlos Montoya, Lead Pastor, Blaze Christian Fellowship, Santa Fe, NM

Many of these books have good intentions and are generally helpful in so far as they help explain how ministry leaders should help people become better disciples. Some books even detail what a disciple looks like. Very few books combine what a disciple is and how a disciple should live for Jesus on a daily basis. Disciple Getting Your Identity From Jesus is written by veteran Pastor Bill Clem Pastor of Mars Hill Ballard in Seattle is a book that balances the what with the how of discipleship.
In eleven chapters spanning 219 pages, Pastor Clem takes his readers on a journey from the story of God to multiplying disciples to the glory of God. Along the way, Bill helps his readers understand not only what the Scriptures teaches about discipleship, but how believers get these issues related to being a disciple wrong. The four most helpful chapters in this book are where Bill takes his extensive experience ministering the Gospel and helps believers understand the various distortions (identity, worship, community and mission) that hinder their growth as disciples of Jesus.
Disciple Getting Your Identity from Jesus is a very helpful book on discipleship not only for ministry leaders, but for every disciple of Jesus. Disciple will help believers understand that Jesus invites His disciples to freedom rather than mere rule keeping, and give them a relationship framework rather than just behavioral prescriptions for pursing God. For those who follow Mars Hill, Acts 29 and the Resurgence is must reading to understand the discipleship framework of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Washington. Disciple by Bill Clem is a book I recommend you pick up and read carefully not just to figure out how to better serve others, but to learn how Jesus calls you to be His discipleââ¬âone who picks up the Cross and bears the marks of the Cross in all of life to the glory of God.

Christians have heard that word everytime they hear the Bible preached and see it in their Bible reading, yet few grasp what the word actually means. That is what Bill Clem addresses in his book Disciple. According to Mark Driscoll, this book serves as the foundation for all the discipleship that takes place at Mars Hill Church.
The first two chapters deal with the story of God and how everything is about God. With every story there is a hero. In the story of God the hero is His Son, Jesus Christ. Next Bill Clem deals with man being image bearers of God and how sin has tainted that image. We are called to be the image of God but the gospel gives us hope in being renewed as image bearers of God.
The next few chapters, Bill Clem deals with worship, community, and mission followed by chapters on what those three are not. I have to admit the one on community really got me fired up because of what I see the church truly needs to be as a community of faith living out the gospel 24/7.
This book was a delight to read. This is one book I would give to a new Christian as well as one who has been in the faith a long time. I tweeted a lot of quotes from this book on Twitter. I was challenged in my own discipleship and how I disciple others. Every church leader needs to read this book.
