Author/Artist Review

Author: Travis Collins
Located in: Midlothian, VA
Submitted: December 21, 2006

Tell us a little about yourself.  The church I serve as pastor is a creative, missional church which averages 1700 - 1800 in several services and three sites on Sundays. I served as a Baptist missionary Journeyman in Venezuela for two years and then as a missionary seminary professor in Nigeria for four years. We had to remain in the states because of my father's debilitating stroke, but I am still a missionary at heart. I love my hobby--high school football officiating. I enjoy being on the field among the guys (and I get a lot of great stories).

What was your motivation behind this project?  I was asked to write this book by the editors of New Hope Publishers. Yet they gave me wonderful freedom to choose the particular direction and content. Because of such things as my work with college students pursuing vocational ministry, and my passion for helping find their "calling," this is a topic about which I am passionate.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I believe God gives us passions and gifts for the fulfilment of His mission in the world. I hope readers will find a sense of adventure and purpose as they learn their role in that divine mission.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My favorite writers include Philip Yancey, Philip Gulley, Tony Campolo, Leonard Sweet, and Brennan Manning. Several years of missionary service and two decades of the pastorate have shaped my thinking about the world and about the "call." My favorite book about God's call is Os Guiness.
